Capítulo 7 - El Condor Pasa

The nearly extinct cóndor (condor), with a wing span of as mucha s ten feet, is one of the largest birds in the world. It lives in the high Andes mountains of South America, and is the subject of many native legends. El cóndor pasa is probably the best-known Andean song in the world. The lyrics and this version of the song were written by Hernando Merino.

Andean music uses a wide array of unique stringed and wind instruments. Among them are el charango – a small, guitar-like instrument made from the shell of an armadillo, la quena – a kind of flute, la zampoña – an instrument similar to a set of pan pipes, and el bombo – a large drum.
