Riding bicycles was extremely popular in 1899. There
were few cars, and people rode bicycles everywhere.
Possibly the best bike riders were the police of New York City. One of their officers even became a great hero.
One day an Officer Murphy said that he could ride as
fast as a railroad train. Everyone laughed because trains, in those days, could travel sixty miles an hour. Murphy became angry, and a race against a train was planned.
The race took place on Long Island, New York.
Thousands of people cheered as Murphy won the race. He had raced even faster than sixty miles an hour. The newspapers made him famous as "Mile-a-minute Murphy."
