UNIT 7

One hundred years ago in the state of Nebraska,
there were very few trees. Julius Morton, a newspaper
writer, had an idea. He wrote and asked everyone to
plant trees on April 10, 1872. He called that day Arbor
Day. People believed it was a good idea, and on that
day they planted more than one million trees.

Soon other states around Nebraska began to have
Arbor Days too. They had an Arbor Day every year. It
was not long before school children all over the country
were celebrating Arbor Day by planting trees.

Does your state have an Arbor Day?
