2005 - 2006 8th Grade Post DMS Student Self-Rated Technology Needs Assessment

DIRECTIONS – For each topic, 1-17, the skills become increasingly more complex as you go from 1 to 4. Choose only one answer.
Select #1 if you do not use that form of technology. Select #2 if you can only do 2. Select #3 if you can do 2 and 3. Select #4 if you can do 1, 2, and 3.



  1. BASIC COMPUTER USE
    I do not use a computer.
    I log-on, log-off, open, use and close a program on my own.
    I open and use more than one program at the same time.
    I learn new programs on my own.


  1. FILE MANAGEMENT
    I do not save any documents I create using the computer
    I select, open and save documents on different drives.
    I create my own folders to keep files organized.
    I move files between folders and drives.


  1. WORD PROCESSING
    I do not use a word processor. (Such as Microsoft Word, ClarisWorks or Lotus WordPro)

    I do not use a database. (Such as ClarisWorks or Access)
    I locate information from a pre-made database such as GALILEO, OPAC and electronic magazine sources.
    I create my own database and add or delete information.
    I generate reports from my own database in order to answer questions


  1. GRAPHICS
    I do not use graphics with my word processing pieces.
    I create pictures with painting and drawing programs or use clip art.
    I edit clip art, scan and import graphics from a variety of sources and modify them using a graphic editor
    I create, select and use graphics in order to make a point or illustrate what I have learned.


  1. E-MAIL
    I do not use e-mail.
    I compose and send e-mail messages.
    I organize my mail folders to save messages and delete those I no longer need.
    I use e-mail to request and send information for research.

    I do not use electronic sources to find information.
    I find information from electronic sources (Internet, GALILEO, CDs).

    I do not use technology for presentations. (Such as PowerPoint or Freelance Graphics)

    I combine text with pictures imported from different sources, to create original multimedia presentations
    I design multimedia presentations employing audio, video and still graphics to share ideas.


  1. INTERNET BROWSING
    I do not use the Internet.
    I visit Internet sites selected by my teacher and use navigation buttons to move between sites.
    I use search engines (CERF, Yahoo, Dogpile, Excite...) to find web sites.
    I use search parameters (Such as and, or, not, quotation marks and asterisk).


  1. WEB PAGE CREATION
    I do not know how to create a web page.
    I can create a simple web page. (Using Composer or FrontPage)
    I can create multi-page web site.
