The Enriching and Gifted Learning Experiences (E.A.G.L.E.) program in our school district is designed for students in grades 2-8.
The purpose of the program is to offer students with advanced cognitive abilities the opportunity to develop creative thinking
and problem solving skills, and to explore accelerated, complex academic work that goes beyond the scope of traditional grade level curricula.
Students are identified for the program through teacher and parent recommendations with behavioral characteristics and subsequent IQ and creativity testing. Yearly achievement tests are also considered. The elementary guidance counselor and district psychometrist, Sally Tracy, conducts all IQ and creativity testing before students are placed in our gifted program.
Families who are new
to the district may wish to hand-deliver previous test results to Ms. Tracy before each school year begins, to speed the identification process for new students.
As of March 17, 2008, the Southern Boone Board of Education formally approved a new gifted identification policy for our district. The gifted screening committee will meet on Tuesday, April 29th, to consider which students will have IQ and creativity testing.

Identified students meet for 150 minutes
each week in a pull-out classroom setting. Please see the Themes of Study page for more information about
lessons and activities.
E.A.G.L.E. Program Logistics
For the year 2007-2008, two groups of fifth and sixth graders and two groups of
sixth and seventh graders
will meet twice weekly for 75 minutes. The "red" 5-6 group and "gold" 7-8 group will meet on
Mondays and Thursdays, and the "blue" 5-6 group and "green" 7-8 group will meet Tuesdays and
Wednesdays. With the middle school red day/black day alternating schedule, this minimizes potential
problems related to pulling students out of classes that meet every other day.
For the 2007-2008 school year, fourth graders will meet on Tuesday and Thursdays,
and 2nd/3rd graders will meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Those EAGLE students will have classes in the new elementary building.
Primary students in first and second grades will have access to a weekly small group pull-out program, based on the Primary Education Thinking Skills (P.E.T.S.) curriculum. We will work on divergent, convergent, and evaluative thinking skills, in addition to specific skills in reading, writing, and math. Selection for these groups will be based on classroom teacher observations, and the groups will rotate often to include many different students who are most likely to benefit from direct instruction in thinking skills.
New This Year
I am teaching a fifth grade special called Thinking Skills in the 2007-2008 year.
Each fifth grade class will meet once a week, and students will build their problem solving skills
in a variety of content areas. Please see the Thinking Skills link for more details.
I have put together an optional set of activities for families to try this year called "Adventures in Challenge."
Anyone in the SoBoCo community is welcome to participate in these challenges. Please
visit the link for more details.
