"All Societies
differentiate between groups. Men and women, the young and the old, the
working class and the middle class, black and white are often perceived
to be socially different in some way. When these differences lead to
greater status, power or privilege for some over others the result is
social stratification. This is a term - borrowed from geology - means
the layering of society into into strata whereby a hierarchy (or ranked
order of importance and differences in social influence and advantage)
emerge. The degree to which a society has a fixed hierarchy is
determined by the degree of opportunity its members have to change their
social position."
