Differentiation & Stratification

Introduction to Stratification activity.

Marx & Weber PP

"All Societies differentiate between groups. Men and women, the young and the old, the working class and the middle class, black and white are often perceived to be socially different in some way. When these differences lead to greater status, power or privilege for some over others the result is social stratification. This is a term - borrowed from geology - means the layering of society into into strata whereby a hierarchy (or ranked order of importance and differences in social influence and advantage) emerge. The degree to which a society has a fixed hierarchy is determined by the degree of opportunity its members have to change their social position."

Taken from Sociology for A2 by Moore, Aiken & Chapman. HarperCollins 2002

Why don't you create your own nation state? How fair would your policies be? Would your economy run smoothly?

"If you want to know what God thinks about money, just look at the people He gives it to." -- Old Irish Saying

Go to this site and build your own nation state,

Move your nation state to the Fareham area or examine the state of poverty in the U.K by going on to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation website.
