My Secret War, The WWII Diary of Madeline Beck

A book review

My Secret War was one of the best books I have ever read.  It is exciting, touching, dramatic and well written.
The heroine, Madeline, lives her eighth grade life in Long Island, New York far from boringly.  With her father away at war, Maddie, (her nickname,) and her mother struggle to live without much money in an old boardinghouse.

When Maddie's father is critically wounded, Maddie doesn't know how she can possibly go on, but with the help of her new Jewish friend, Clara, and her boyfriend, Johnny she does go on, and she and Johnny are closer than ever.  In her grief she takes to walking the beach at night, a practice which is forbidden.  One fateful night, she is discovered on the beach by four men whom she believes to be the Coast Guard.  When she and her boyfriend go back to visit the sight of the encounter again, they make a startling and horrifying discovery.  What should they do?
They finally decide to bring their evidence to the F.B.I., after much thought.  Did they change to course of history?

I would give this book five stars, I think that it was fantabulous.

                  The Magician's Nephew
                                    By: C.S. Lewis
                              Book review By: Caitlyn Ruph

I think this book is awsome. It's very exciting and full of adventures to different worlds. It will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
The book takes place in England "when your grandfather was just a boy." The is a girl named Polly who meets a boy named Digory when he moves in next door. They go to Polly's secret hiding spot (the attic that connects their houses and many others.) They are trying to get into an empty house's attic to see if it is hauted. When they accidentally mis-count their steps they wind up in Digory's Uncle Andrew's secret lab.
Uncle Andrew gives Polly a mysterious glowing ring but when she touches it she winds up in a pond in the Wood Between the Worlds. Digory soon follows. Will they ever reach home again or are they trapped in the woods forever?
This book is an absolute ***** (five star.)

                  The Horse and His Boy
                                         By:C.S. Lewis
                              Book Review By:Caitlyn Ruph

This book is one of my favorites by C.S. Lewis. Of all the books of his I have read this is the most exciting and creative one.
First, there is a slave boy named Shasta who lives on a beach with his father/master. Shasta has always hated his father but has repeatedly told himself it's not right. One day a Tarkaan (a royal ruler) comes by and tells Shasta's father that he must give him a shelter to sleep in for the night. While they are talking Shasta overhears the Tarkaan ask  if he can buy his slave named Shasta from him. His father will give him to the Tarkaan but first he tells him about how he got Shasta. Shasta was found floating in the ocean in a small boat when he was little. Now he understands why he hated "his father" so much. Now he wonders who his real dad is. Then he thinks about if the Tarkaan will be easier or harder on him than his "father" was. The Tarkaan's horse hears Shasta say this to himself and tells him that the Tarkaan is very hard on him. He can talk because he is a talking horse from Narnia. They decide to run away together to the north and Narnia.
What will they run into during this adventure? Will they survive? Will Shasta ever find his real father?
This book is a definate ***** (five star).

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen
                                            By: Dyan Sheldon
A book review by Sarah Fletcher

I recently read a book; a fairly new book, one that had its first edition out in 1999; called "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen," by Dyan Sheldon.  It's a comedic, yet serious, book about Mary Elizabeth Cep, preferably known as Lola Elspeth Cep, set in suburban New Jersey.

When sixteen year old Mary/Lola, (who has future plans to be an actress,) must move from New York City to suburban New Jersey, she decides to recreate herself for her new classmates, which proves to be very interesting.  Her wild tales turn her into a kind of goddess, but when she gets the part in the annual school play, instead of super-popular Carla Santini, she starts a war with Carla that she had never, ever dreamed of.  Determined to win the war, though, she and her new best friend Ella must battle the evils of rain, poverty, the police, and not understanding guards to get to the best band concert and party ever.  When they finally get to the party and go back to school to tell every one about it, will Carla even give them credit for it?

This book was great!!! Sheldon describes the ups and downs of Lola's life excellently!  I highly recommend this book to everyone. :)

                  The Trouble with Lemons
                                         By: Daniel Hayes
This book is about a boy named Tyler McAllister who has a lot of problems. His mom and brother and big movie stars and are never around, his dad died, he has a lot of allergies and he's been plaqued by nightmares since his father passed away. He calls himself a lemon because no one likes lemons and he feels no one likes him.
First of all, he sneaks out of his house to swim at the quarry with his best friend Lymie. While he's swimming he brushes up against the dead body of the school janitor BooBoo.
They run back to Tyler's house and call the police anonomously and tell them what they found. Tyler is constaltly stalked by the idea of someone finding out that it was him who found Booboo in fear that the murderers would come after him.
Tyler is determined to find out who the murderers are. He has a lot more to worry about than dumb things like nightmares that still haunt him in the darkness of his bedroom every night. Now he has to worry about the murderers haunting him all the time.

Will he find out who did it? How will he find out who the murderers are without giving himself away? Will that person get away with murder?
I really liked this book because it was about a mystery and I love mysteries!
