Have a great summer! Have a safe and healthy summer. Take advantage of this time to explore college campuses. The college application process will begin in the fall. This is also a great time to take the Illinois and Federal Constitution tests. See the Saint Viator website for more information. Take a look at the courses you’ve registered to take next year. Have you met all of your graduation requirements? Are you taking a rigorous course load? If you are a student athlete, have you registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse? Are you using Naviance to explore different colleges and majors? There is a lot of work that can be done over the summer. I will be in and out of the office all summer. I will be checking my e-mail and voicemail periodically. I will officially be back in the office August 10, 2009. If you have any concerns about your schedule or courses for next year, feel free to e-mail me and I will respond when I’m at school. If you need immediate assistance, Mrs. Smith will be working in the Counseling Office from 8:00 a.m till 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can reach her at 847-392-4050 x261 or msmith@saintviator.com. Make the most of this summer. Senior year is quickly approaching and time will go by fast! See you in the fall. Student Athletes, have you registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse? If you plan on playing sports in college, you need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. This can be done on their website at www.ncaaclearinghouse.org. You will need to print off two transcript request forms to turn into the school, this will allow us to mail your junior and senior year transcripts to the Clearinghouse. Have you registered to take the ACT? There will still be testing opportunities in the fall. Check out the ACT website for fall test dates. To register your student, you can go online at www.actstudent.org or have your child pick up a registration packet in the Counseling Office. The Saint Viator school code is 140-098. We encourage all students to take the ACT plus writing at least once. Have you made your appointment to meet with Kathy Duggan? At the end of junior year, every student and their parent were invited to meet with Kathy Duggan, our college counselor. If you didn’t have a chance to meet with Kathy, there’s still time in the fall. Please call Mary Lou Smith in the Counseling Department to set up your appointment 847-392-4050 x261. Mrs. Duggan will help you come up with your own individualized plan for college planning. Please fill out the college information form that was given to you at the junior parent meeting, before your meeting with Mrs. Duggan. Mrs. Duggan is happy to meet with students or parents any time about their college needs. National Honor Society Students are selected to NHS after the first semester of their junior year, some students may be considered after the second semester of their junior year. Students are selected by demonstrating excellence in four areas: scholarship (93% or higher at the end of their fifth and/or sixth semester), leadership, service, and character. For more information, please look on page 11 of the student handbook. Ms. Ashley Kirst (akirst@saintviator.com) and Mrs. Lucille Young (lyoung@saintviator.com) are the moderators for NHS if you have any questions. Senior year invitations wil be sent out in the fall, probably some time in September. Naviance Family Connections Program All parents have been sent a letter in the mail, introducing them to the Naviance Program. Naviance Family Connections is a great resource for students to explore colleges and careers. The program not only offers information about colleges and universities, but also uses historical data from past students to help current students see how they measure up to admissions guidelines. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or the Counseling Office for more details. Constitution Test and Packet The packet for the Constitution test is available in the bookstore. Students are supposed to fill the packet out on their own and then turn it in two weeks before the test. The due dates are located in the information found in the packet. It would be a good idea to copy the packet before turning it in to study from, since it will not be given back before the test. Students may take the U.S. Constitution test and the Illinois test together or on different announced test dates. Summer Sessions There will be three tests given during the summer on the following dates. No review sessions will be held for students during the summer. Test Date Packet Due Registration for Tests Friday, June 12 Friday, June 5 Friday, June 19 Friday, June 12 Friday, July 10 Monday, July 6 Tests are tentatively set for 9 a.m. on the test date. Please verify information on the Web site prior to the test date. The U.S. Constitution and Illinois Constitution tests will be given on each of these dates. Students have the option of taking one or both of these tests on these dates. Students must turn in their packets by the dates listed above or they will be assigned to the following test date. Student packets will not be returned prior to the testing dates. Therefore, they should make copies of them in order to review for the tests. Students do better if they take the U.S. Constitution first because of the overlap in terminology. If you have further questions, see Fr. Hall in Room 139 before school or call him on ext. 222. * * * * * Service Hours If you have any questions about service hours please call Betsy Fons, in Campus Ministry at (847)392-4050 x268. She will be available to assist you. There are many different options available in Campus Ministry. ROLE OF THE COUNSELOR The counselors at Saint Viator High School provide many services that assist students in their educational and developmental progress. Counselors work with students on a variety of issues: academic concerns, self-esteem issues, peer relationships, drug and alcohol issues, career planning, college choices, etc. Working with students, parents, teachers, and administrators, we seek to facilitate the educational experience of each student. The Counseling Department places a high priority on availability. A student, however, may at times find an empty office or a closed door because the counselor is busy with another student. In those cases, we encourage the student to leave a note, and we will then make an appointment with that student as soon as possible. Parents are also encouraged to initiate contact with their child’s counselor when the need arises. SAINT VIATOR WEBSITE (www.saintviator.com) Check out the Saint Viator High School website for invaluable information. If you go to the faculty webpages and click on your student’s teachers, you will be able to discover what homework has been assigned for the coming week. These pages are updated by 3:00 pm every Monday whenever possible. While teachers will not update daily, we do think this will be a benefit for our parents and students to monitor what is going on in classes and to help students when they miss school. NEED EXTRA HELP? Saint Viator has a variety of different resources available for students to get extra help if they are experiencing difficulties in a class. Meeting with the teacher and going in for extra help from them is always the best approach to try first. Saint Viator does have a Math Lab, Foreign Language Lab, and Writing Lab available to students every day during school hours, staffed by teachers. The Math Lab is in room 239. Students may have their agendas signed by a teacher and go to any of the labs during their lunch period or free time. Another option for receiving extra help is requesting a National Honor Society Tutor. These tutors are upperclassmen who have volunteered their time to work with students in particular subject areas. Students often meet before or after school. In order to request a tutor, pick up a form in the Counseling office. All counselors also have a list of outside resources who charge a fee for their services. See your counselor for more information. PEER MEDIATION AT SAINT VIATOR Has your son or daughter ever come home and talked to you about having a conflict with another student? At Saint Viator, we have a Peer Mediation program, which is a student-led process designed to resolve conflicts between two people in disagreement. We currently have 32 students trained as mediators, and they are on-call each day in case any students are referred for mediation. Teachers, coaches, administrators, staff members, or other students can refer someone for a mediation. Referral forms are located in various offices throughout the building, and the person making the referral is always kept anonymous. Over the years, our program has been very successful in helping students resolve their problems, which helps them avoid potential disciplinary measures. As parents, you can encourage your student to use this process when needed. If you have questions about Peer Mediation please call Mr. Majkowski at extension 248.
