GO COUGARS! QUARTER 3 WEEK 4 2012 MONDAY: 20-minute introduction to Great Expectations! Talk about the popularity of the novel; talk about the social and economic setting of the time, and its influence on Dickens' audience and subject matter. Explain the setting and some of the characters; glance at the long list, but don't go over it in detail; go over the challenges and rewards of reading this novel; anticipate some confusion by explaining "church yard," "file," "wittles," and "gibbet." Then hear all of Chapter One aloud; HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: read Chapters 2 & 3. One or two of you will get done; most will need to finish three at home! Email me with any questions you have about the text!

TUESDAY: COUGAR DAY! Go over facts about Dickens via an overhead that Mrs. D. used to use as a quiz on some background reading, before she started showing the A & E video! Many of the questions you will know from having seen the A & E biography; many you can guess....but it will help you understand some of the connections between Dickens' personal life and Great Expectations. After all, literature is all about context! Next, get in groups of 2 or 3 to complete study questions on Chapters 2, & 3 together. This will help Mrs. D. determine who will work together on your Final Character Assessment for the novel. WEDNESDAY: See a bit of the film to get a feel for the setting and characters! Then go on to read Chapters 4 & 5. THURSDAY: COUGAR DAY! TBA
FRIDAY TBA THIS WEEK'S SECRET PHRASE: "A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg. A man with no hat, and with broken shoes, and with an old rag tied round his head. A man who had been soaked in water, and smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped, and shivered, and glared and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his head as he seized me by the chin." ---Pip describes the convict in Chapter One of Great Expectations
