German 7 "BD" Days I told students recently that I submitted my resignation as German teacher at Farnsworth Middle School. This was not an easy decision because teaching and getting to know this group of 7th graders has made my work something I truly look forward to each day. The district is already advertising for my replacement, and I hope my students are looking forward in anticipation to who their new German teacher will be! Learning German is a wonderful goal that can open many doors and windows to the world around us. Their new teacher will work hard to get them there. I can imagine bumping into former students ten or twenty years from now to hear some of them speaking better German than their old teacher and telling me of adventures like traveling through the Black Forest, seeing the Alps, taking a business trip to Düsseldorf, learning about the music industry in Mannheim, working with a German colleague on nano technologies in Dresden or energy technologies in Munich, and so much more! This last quarter of my tenure here at FMS finds me very busy at home preparing for our move to Florida. I have loved providing my students with as many tools as possible to be successful in German. That took up more time than my contractual work schedule. I continue to try to offer lessons that advance their skills and understanding of concepts and culture. I must, however, limit some of the extra work such as maintaining web pages and looking over notebooks on a regular basis. I have told students that speaking practice remains the most important homework assignment for them. I hope it has become a regular part of their homework schedule and that they continue to practice at home in the future. Their skills in German and the higher test grades that will come as a result will reflect the effort they put into their practice. The student/teacher/parent partnership in learning that is part of the culture at Farnsworth Middle School is something I appreciate dearly. Being part of the growth and development of these fine young people is something I will always treasure. To all of you I wish "Alles Gute und viel Erfolg in die Zukunft." (all good things and success in the future) Frau Hill
