| PLEASE READ ALL THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY! |

Welcome to the placement test homepage of the Spanish Language Program at The George Washington University. There are five steps you must take in order to be placed into a Spanish class at GW.
Step 1
Determine if you need to take the online placement test.
You will need to take the placement test if:
• you have taken Spanish courses during highschool, or at an institution other than The George Washington University
• you have not studied Spanish, but it is a language that is spoken at home
• you lived in a Spanish-speaking country, or were in that country for an extended period of time
• you are a native speaker of Spanish
• you feel that your AP scores and/or SAT II scores do not accurately reflect your Spanish level
You will not need to take the Spanish Evaluation under the following circumstances:
• If you received a score of 5 on the AP Spanish Language Exam, this score gives you credit for Spanish 2005 and 2006, and you can register for Spanish 3010 or 3020.
• If you received a score of 5 on the AP Spanish Literature Exam, please register for a Literature class.
Step 2
Once you find out that you must take the placement exam, create a free Quia account. To do this, go to the Quia Web site. Click the link labeled "Create my free account." Fill out the form that appears. Select "Student" as the account type. Record or memorize your username and password. When you are done, press the "Create my account" button. You should now be in your account information page. Type in the class code PTXX738 at the bottom of the page and press the "Add class" button. Now you're done! Come back to this page and read the instructions below.
Step 3
Read the following instructions carefully.
• The average time to complete this exam is ONE HOUR. Exams taken in less than a 20-minute time frame will be consider invalid.
• Adhere to the terms of the Academic Integrity Policy set forth by the George Washington University.
• DO NOT receive assistance from anyone else to answer any of the exam questions. This exam must be a reflection of your own knowledge of the Spanish language.
• DO NOT consult any materials, including dictionaries, textbooks, or make use of any other pedagogical aids while taking this exam.
• DO NOT GUESS your way through the difficult questions. Instead, leave questions blank. Guessing will inflate your score, which will result in a placement higher that your real ability. This may result in (a) a poor grade in the class you take, or (b) lack of a seat in any Spanish class after adjustment of language level is made. Please see below for consequences of placing oneself at levels higher or lower than actual true performance.
• The Spanish Language Program and the Department of Romance, German, and Slavic Languages and Literatures reserve the right to place students at higher or lower levels of language courses than the results of this exam may suggest, particularly when discrepancies between the student's exam results and actual in-class performance are discovered. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to adhere to the terms of this exam so that your performance is a true reflection of your level in Spanish.
• If a student violates any of the instructions here, (s)he may be removed from the language course for which (s)he is registered, and neither the Spanish Language Program nor the Department will be held responsible for securing a seat in any Spanish class after adjustment of language level is made. Moreover, any violations of academic integrity will be reported to the Office of Academic Integrity for further action.
Step 4
Now take the test. When you are done, print out the score. (If you forget to or cannot print out the score at this point, do not worry. With your username and password, you can always go back to your account page and print out the score.)
Step 5
Consult the table below to find out the course you need to enroll into. Every professor and advisor will also receive a copy of your score.
