Practical Tips for Helping Young Writers...

Finding Poems Anywhere

Here's a fun activity for writing poetry. It is called a Found Poem.

Select a page from a novel, simple story or any type of good prose appropriate to the age of the writer. Either photocopy a double page or have the child look at a double page.

Tell them that hiding in this piece of prose is a poem.

Next circle, underline or flag words that you like. Select random words that jump out at you and that you feel may go well together.

Then write down the words you chose on a separate sheet of paper. You don't need to use them in the order you found them. Mix and match words until you "find" a poem.

If any of you try this activity with your child, please send me the poems. I would love to see them. Have fun!
