First, take your quiz, using the links below. Next, you are going to pretend to be a letter-writing Civil War soldier on June 30, 1863. You can pretend to be either a Confederate or a Union soldier, but you will need to be specific about your regiment and your commanding general. Will you be one of General Longstreet's men? One of the mutineers who decided to join Joshua Chamberlain with the 20th Maine? One of Buford's cavalry? Write a letter to your teacher back home and tell him what your life as a soldier is like. You are near the town of Gettysburg, and you suspect a battle will happen soon. Use the blue sensory sheet to help you describe camp life, and what you have learned from reading The Killer Angels to help you write an interesting, informative letter to your old teacher back home. BIG PICTURE: 1. Use Microsoft Word to write your letter. 2. SAVE it on your computer. 3. Copy and paste your work into the "quiz" below before the end of the period. Hopefully we will have another day in class to work on this, but you must submit what you complete in class today. DETAILS: 1. Include an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. 2. Each of the three body paragraphs should describe a different part of your life as a soldier. (For example, you could describe leisure time, your commanding general, and a battle.) 3. Your paragraphs should have between 75 and 150 words each. Introductions and conclusions will be shorter than body paragraphs. 4. Your completed letter must have 400-600 words. 5. Use complete sentences and your best writing skills -- this is your former teacher you are writing to! Do not include anything that would be historically impossible. If you have trouble, look at the links below for ideas.
