About me
Welcome to French class 2021-22!

PLease be sure to check our class information on CANVAS -- https://carmel.instructure.com We do use this website quite frequently, particularly for tests and quizzes and so I will be maintaining this as the "Go to" site from the Clay Staff Directory.

GRADE 8

Recommended supply list for Grade 8 French for 2020-21:

INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS NEED:
-- earbuds or headphones, WITH A MICROPHONE. These need to be brought to school daily or kept in the locker so that students are able to use them for listening and speaking activities.
--Composition Notebook w/ sewn binding. College Ruled -- 100 pages.
--a personal dry erase marker to use during class (replace as needed) and an old sock or rag to erase with
--pockets that go in the binder that can hold unpunched papers
--loose leaf notebook paper
--pencils, erasers
--pens
--highlighter
--markers or colored pencils
--Index cards -- useful for flashcards for practicing vocabulary if a student prefers this method over computer-based flash cards.

TECH ITEMS
--Your charged school computer!
--A QR Code Reader App would be useful to have installed if your student has a smartphone. Our textbook contains these codes, which allow students to access the textbook videos on their phones.

GRADE 8 STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
Students will receive login info for their digital textbook as soon as I have it from the tech team. Resources for our French 1 book are available at: This will be coming in the future. The textbook company no longer supports the resources that used to be available in the same format as previously, so it is a bit complicated.

Students are encouraged to come for help or retakes during Core Plus time, which is often, but not always (Teams sometimes change their schedules) on white or B days. I am usually available from 2:30-3:30. This is during my prep time so I do not have other student responsibilities. Students need to get a pass from me that they can give to their Core Plus teacher.

General Info
Bonjour!

Parents, please encourage your students to study DAILY in the ways that help them learn bestNot all methods are equally effective for all students.

For best results, an 8th grader enrolled in the first-year French course should be spending 20 minutes EACH evening studying or practicing vocabulary and grammar from our current lesson, or reviewing prior lessons. Learning a new language is not unlike learning to play a musical instrument in that daily practice is extraordinarily beneficial. Students have access to resources online, including audio and video reinforcement for those who like to see and listen. Many review activities are available on the computer. Please do not hesitate to email if you have any questions or concerns.

I am a 1984 graduate of Carmel High School, and I was even a student at Clay "back in the day."

I have a bachelor's degree in French and English from Purdue University and a master's in Language Education from IU. I spent a year studying in Strasbourg, France as a college student, and a year in Paris teaching English to French high school students. I taught French to undergraduate students at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and high school French and English at Hamilton Heights High School in Arcadia, IN.

We will be reading, writing, speaking and listening in our classes and we will learn about French-speaking people and culture as well. One of my favorite ways to enjoy French is by listening to songs and podcasts in French.

I live in Carmel with my husband Mike. We have two children (twins) who graduated from Carmel High School in 2014 and who graduated from college in 2018. One of our kids now lives in Oakland, California and the other lives in New Orleans, Louisiana. Our entire family enjoys camping, hiking and gaming. We are also all a bit famous in the extended family for always having our heads stuck in books!
