1. Use your time in the classroom well! The more time you spend with the language, the better and faster you will learn it. Use the time you have in class each week to work on your language skills. Pay attention and actively participate in the activities suggested by your teacher – they will help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing competence in the foreign language! 2. Study your vocabulary! The more words you know, the more you can say and understand. Build up your vocabulary by studying the words you learned in class. Repeat them as often as you can! The words will become more and more familiar, until they eventually become an automatic part of your language repertoire. 3. Do your homework! Homework offers you a golden opportunity to practice and repeat the structures and words you have learned in class. Take your time when doing your homework, look up words you don’t know and review difficult concepts and phrases. If you never look things up and simply guess, you will not learn proper forms and words. Homework supports your language learning. 4. Practice language actively! Whenever possible, speak the language aloud. Say vocabulary words out loud, read sentences, text passages, instructions and exercises on your worksheets out loud. Practice the pronunciation of words as often as you can and you will become familiar with the sounds and the rhythm of the language. 5. Practice every day (or as often as you can...)! Listen, read and speak the language every day. You can start by simply practicing the language with a classmate outside of class. Go online on the German page of your school and read the texts, listen to the music, and browse the websites. You can befriend native speakers in your community or attend a local German club, if one exists. Rent a movie in German, or listen to authentic radio online. Remember that you won't be able to understand everything, and you might not understand much at all at first. But if you keep listening and reading you will eventually get used to the language. Finally…. Remember that the only way to learn the language is through PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and more PRACTICE; in the course of practicing you will make many mistakes… and you will learn from them.
