Dare Elementary Second Grade Teacher
                                                    Callaway’s Crew Update

As we head into May and June, Second Grade has saved the best for last.  The students are beginning the unit of study on economics. The highlight is an EBay simulation activity. Mrs. Jones collaborates with second grade teachers and parents in this simulation where the children actually bid for stuffed animals. You will get more information on this soon.  After we finish up measurement in Math, the students will begin the study of geometry concepts and simple multiplication/ division facts.  In Scott Foresman Reading, the students will continue Unit 6 “Imagine That.” We will wrap up Social Studies “How Communities Change Over Time.” with a trip to the Yorktown Victory Center.
2008-2009 has been a stellar year for our class. Continue your child’s adventures in learning this summer.  Some suggestions are:
            1. Visit the county’s public libraries and check out books at least once a week.
            2. Take trips to Historic Jamestowne Island, Jamestown and Yorktown Settlements. Our field trips to the Settlements only explored the highlights.  There is so much more to see and do… and for York County residents it is a free trip.
            3. Visit indoor museums on scorching hot days.  The Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Nauticus, the Air and Space Museum, the Portsmouth Children’s Museum, and the Virginia Aquarium are all great places. Don’t forget Afton Mountain near Charlottesville.
            4. Spend a day at the local beaches, go fishing or crabbing, observe wildlife.  Take a ride on the Jamestown- Scotland Ferry.  Think about the James River from the view of the early settlers. Just go to Williamsburg and walk on Duke of Gloucester street …drink cold lemonade on a hot day. Simple pleasures are the best.
            5. Drive to Washington D.C., Kitty Hawk, N.C., the Eastern Shore, and to Monticello.
            6. Have a picnic and enjoy the summer.
