Dear 5th Graders and Parents:

Welcome to our fifth week of the new school year.  This page is intended to update you on weekly assignments and general information throughout the school year.  It is updated on Sunday evenings as a general rule.  It is not a substitute for your child's agenda, and it should be noted that plans are subject to change in accordance with the pace of the class.

This week, our schedule is a bit unusual due to Picture Day (Tuesday), School Liturgy (Wednesday at 10), and the Fall Fundraiser Kickoff (Friday). Additionally, we do begin IOWA testing at the end of the week.  Some subject areas will be modified to allow for these changes.

The anticipated agenda follows:

Science, 5A and 5B - We begin a study of vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, Chapter 4.
Tuesday: (5A on Wed.) Compare and contrast traits, pp. A92-95.
Thursday: Chart invertebrate groupings according to traits, pp. A96-97.
Friday: Chart vertebrate groupings according to traits, pp. A98-99.

Reading, 5A and 5B - We abbreviate our studies in our Reading textbook.  There will be no test this week.
Tuesday: Summarize informational article tied to Orphan Trains, last week's theme, pp. 79-83.  Also, 5B practices skills of making judgments and discerning setting, WB 7 and 17.
Wednesday: 5A practices skills of making judgments and discerning setting, WB 7 and 17.
Thursday: Practice skills of sequencing and drawing conclusions, WB 27 and 37.
Friday: Practice skill of analyzing a poster announcement, WB 29-30.

Religion: Ch. 2. - We did not get to some planned activities last week, but we do conclude our chapter and do its quiz in this week.
Tuesday: Review "big picture" highlights and practice on Loyola web site.
Wednesday: Quiz, Ch. 2: Jesus Calls Us to Worship.
Thursday: Consideration of our school's Mission Statement, in preparation for next week's Anti-Bullying Awareness lessons.
Friday: DWP lesson on the value of Listening and Following Instructions.

Vocabulary/Spelling - We are drawing to a close on Unit 1.  A test is scheduled this Friday.  Students are encouraged to use this vocabulary in everyday conversation, particularly in the classroom.
Tuesday: Vocab Fun, p. 14.
Wednesday: "Sparkle" game to practice Spellings.
Thursday: Challenge vocab, p. 13.
Friday: Test.

Writing - We are studying the application of more precise subjects and verbs to add to reader interest.
Tuesday: Verb Charades; WS 16.

English - We will not formally do English this week, although instructions will be distributed for a Narrative Nonfiction (Reads as a story but really happened) Book Report.  Your child may need help choosing a book from the public library. He/She will receive an instruction sheet on Tuesday.  This applies only to 5B.

Thank you for entrusting your children to me. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me, using the address that appears on the front page of your child's agenda. Have a good week!

Blessings,
Mrs. Saller
