Dear 5th Graders and Parents:
Welcome to 5th Grade! This page is intended to update you on weekly assignments and general information throughout the school year. It is updated on Sunday (occasionally, Monday) evenings as a general rule. It is not a substitute for your child's agenda, and it should be noted that plans ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE in accordance with the pace of the class.
Parents and Students, thank you all for your kindnesses in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. I LOVED the apple theme, the coffee and lunch treats, delicious fresh-baked rolls, cards, flowers, tote basket, and gift cards. I felt very appreciated, and I am so honored to be a part of the "fabric" that makes up our school!

1. You are welcome to join us for an All-School Liturgy Wednesday morning at 8:30.
2. 5B Students are reminded to bring in baby pictures of themselves to be featured on a "Guess Who" Valentine's Day poster. Please put your child's picture, with name on back, in an envelope to be turned in to me. Pictures will be returned shortly after Valentine's Day.
Anticipated plans are as follows:
Science (5A and 5B, Monday-Thursday) We are continuing a study of the Earth's biomes. Students will examine how Nature repairs itself when "wounded."
Monday: Ecological Succession, pp. B82-83. HW: WS 121, #1-9, and 126.
Tuesday: Succession on volcanic islands, pp. B84-86. HW: WS 121-122, #10-15.
Wednesday: Disappearance of Dinosaurs, pp. B88-89.
Thursday: Ch. 6 Vocab Quiz; How fossils provide insights, pp. B90-91. HW: WS 122, #16-24.
Reading (5A and 5B) -
We continue a literature study for Bud, Not Buddy. A classroom copy is provided for student use, and copies are available when students are ill, but you may wish to obtain a copy from the library for home use. Notes will be kept daily, for use in studying for comprehension tests, on characters, setting changes, events, new vocabulary or expressions, and any conflicts.
Monday: pp. 96-107: Bud vs. Vampire, read in trios.
Tuesday: pp. 108-121: Ride to Grand Rapids, read by teacher.
Wednesday: pp. 121-129: Redcaps (fluency practice; students read orally).
Thursday: : pp. 130-139: Labor Union Trouble, read by teacher.
Friday: B,NB Vocabulary practice and review using notes; Weekly Reader. Test Monday.
Religion: This week, we resume our book studies to the Liturgy of the Eucharist beyond the introductory preparation (Chapter 10) and examine closing rites (Chapter 11). We did not make the progress expected last week.
Monday: Our imperative: "Go Forth to Love and Serve," pp. 67-68.
Tuesday: Loaves and Fishes: An Analogy, WS 36. HW: WS 38.
Wednesday: School Liturgy; Describe how students can spread Good News, p. 69.
Thursday: Scriptural basis for "loving and serving the Lord," Mt. 25:31-46.
Friday: Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, p. 70.
English: We continue a study of Unit 9, Pronouns. We also continue ongoing practice using Simple Solutions Grammar; our usual weekly quiz schedule is revised such that the weekly quiz will be Friday.
Monday: Applying WE and US with nouns, pp. 306-307. HW: SS Grammar #77 and p.327 A and C.
Tuesday: Commas in Direct Address, pp. 308-309, and SS Quiz from last week. HW: SS Grammar #78 and WS 70.
Wednesday: Decoding prefixed words, pp. 310-311. HW: SS Grammar #79 and WS 71.
Thursday: Pronoun agreement with Referent Noun, pp. 312-313. HW: WS 72 and SS Grammar #80.
Friday: SS Quiz.
Vocabulary: We are reviewing Chapters 4-6.
