ALGEBRA SYLLABUS

    ______ ________ __ ____ ___
Febr uary 14th No class today due to testing
    no new homework

    February 15th
    Homework: finish review worksheet
Answer key was distributed in class

    Fe bruary 18th
8-5: Graphing Syst ems of Inequaliti es
    homewo rk: pg. 485 (15, 21, 22, 28, 30
    Please remember to:
put each equation into slope-intercept form
    write down the slope
    write down the y-intercept
write down if the lin e is solid or dashed
    test (0,0)
i f (0,0) is fal se, please try an ordered pair on the other side of the line
the intersection of the shading is the solution set to the inequalities

    February 19th
8-5: Graphing systems of inequali t i es
    homework: pg. 485 (15, 21, 22, 2 8, 30)
    #17
    y > 3
    dashed line
    test (0,0)
    0 > 3 false
    try (0,4)
0 > 3 true so line goes up away from the x-axis
    next equation
    y >-x + 4
    slope is -1
    y-intercept 4
    dashed line
    0>-0 + 4
    0 > 4 is false
try (5,0) on the other side
    0 > -5 + 4
    0 > -1
    true

    #24
    x - y < -1
    x -x -y< -1 -x
    -y < -x - 1
    multiply through by -1
remember that this reverses the sign
    y > x + 1
    dashed line
    slope is 1
    y-intercept is -1
    test (0,0)
    0 > 0 + 1 is false
    try (0,3)
    3 > 0 + 1
true so graph goes in that direction

    other equation
    x - y > 3
    x - x - y > - x + 3
    -y > -x + 3
we need t he "y" to be positive so multiply throu gh by -1
    y < x - 3
remember to reverse the inequality symbol
    slope is 1
    y-intercept is -3
    dashed line
    test (0,0)
    0 < 0 - 3
    false
try (0, -4) which is true
there is no solution to this system of ine qualities as there is no overlap

    # 2 5
    2y + x < 6
    2y + x - x < 6 - x
    2y < -x + 6
divide each side through by 2
    y < -1/2 x + 3
    slope is -1/2
    y-intercept is 3
    test (0,0)
    0 < -1/2 (0) + 3
    0 < 3 is tr ue
    das hed line

    other equation
    3x - y > 4
    3x - 3x - y > -3x + 4
    -y > -3x + 4
multiply through by -1 so the "y" is positive
don't forget to switch the inequality because of the multipication by a negative number
    y < 3x - 4
    slope is 3
    y-intercept is -4
    dashed line
    test (0,0)
    0 < 3(0) - 4
0 < -4 is false try one on the other side
    (0, -8)
    -8 < -4 true
