WHAT ARE WE LEARNING
RELIGION:
I am very excited to introduce our new school religion book series "Faith First". The focus for chaper #1 is "God Speaks to Us". Our class will discuss diffetrent ways God speaks to us. Also, we have been reading our favorite Bible stories. This helps us to understand the importance of reading the Bible. The Faith Words of this chapter are:faith, Holy Trinity, Old Testament, New Testament, and disciples. We made our "Prayer" booklet that contains our 3rd grade prayers which will be praying throughout the school year. After the opening school Mass, we prayed to Our Lady of Perpetual Help for her guidance and strength this school year.
MATH:
We started the unit with our Back to School review. Please review math vocabulary with your child for Unit #1. You'll find the math vocabulary list on your child's math spiral notebook. Extra practice for each unit is provided at www.eduplace.com, you and your child may explore and use this wonderful math resource that is linked to our Houghton Mifflin Math program. The next few weeks, we'll learn how to use numbers, place value: ones, ten, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands.
READING:
The theme of our first Unit focuses on how friends and our family help us grow. The story of "How I spent My Summer Vacation" provides students an understanding on the sequence of events to follow story order. You may bring home your reading textbook to review the story before Friday's vocabulary and comprehension test.
GRAMMAR:
We are learning how a group of words makes a statement, a question, a command, or an exclamation. In addition, the students will recognize complete sentences and correct capitalization.
ACCELERATED READING:
Our goal for this year is that every third grader should be reading an AR book from our school library and take a reading comprehension quiz. This is your child's independent reading time. We read 15 minutes after school lunch and everyone should be either reading a book, taking a quiz, or checking a book at the Library. Please remind your child not to forget his/her AR book at home. Each child will have an AR folder with an Individual Goal. Mrs. Sobczyk and I will introduce this reading program by reading a book and guiding the class on how to log in at the computer and take an AR quiz.
SPELLING:
Lesson #1: We learned how to spell with single and double consonatns. Lesson #2: The students identified, used, and spelled words with hard and soft /c/ and /g/. Your child should copy the spelling words for every week on his/her Agenda planner in alphabetical order and study for final tests on Fridays.
HANDWRITTING:
We are learning the importance of a good seating posture when we write. The postion of the paper on their desk and the appropriate way to hold a pencil. Letter formation, size of the letters, and space between words are part of our handwriting grade.
Please check the school calendar for upcoming events.
