Week of September 5, 2006
Welcome to Ms. Pellarin's Class Page for Second Grade! If you and your child have not had an opportunity for online learning through a customized weekly class page, you're in for a treat. This page will feature the story your child is reading in Language Arts at school each week and provide games for practicing vocabulary and links to background and enrichment activities. I hope you and your child will spend time on this site each week and find it a helpful and enriching experience.
Our first Language Arts theme is "Being Me". In this theme, students will learn how people discover new things about themselves through experiences and relationships. The five stories in this unit illustrate how the differences among people are what make each person special.
Lucy's Quiet Book, by Angela Shelf Medearis, is our first story selection. It is an example of realistic fiction and tells about a quiet girl who learns that a good book and a loud voice can get the attention of even the noisiest children.
How to Use the Class Pages~
Your child can review and practice the vocabulary words and definitions for Lucy's Quiet Book by clicking the Java Games link in the Quia activities section below. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary words and meanings) from the game choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice. Once your child can easily match the words and definitions, try playing the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in the context of sentences.
The Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page features hyperlinks to other sites that contain background materials and enrichment activities that go along with this week's story. These links are provided as an extra opportunity for fun and learning for you and your second grader. The first time you visit some of the sites (example: Harcourt School, *Crayola), you will need to register. After you have completed the free registration once, you should not be prompted to do so when visiting the site from the same computer again. **The Harcourt School site will always be the first link in the Useful links section. It was created by the publishers of your child's reader and correlates directly to our reading story for the week. You will need to enter the password Farr on your first visit. You can choose to save the password on your computer so you will not need to reenter it each week. Some of the game links will require Shockwave and/or Flash Player; both are free downloads at http://www.macromedia.com
