Week of December 4, 2006
We will read From Seed to Plant, by Gail Gibbons, a Science-based nonfiction selection this week. It describes, in detail, the life cycle of plants and includes several labeled diagrams. The reading level of this selection is more difficult than that of past stories, so it may take more time for your child to complete the reading assignment this week.
Your child can review and practice the vocabulary words and definitions for From Seed to Plant by clicking the Java Games link in the Quia activities section. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary words and meanings) from the game choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice. Once your child can easily match the words and definitions, try playing the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in the context of sentences.
Check out the Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page. It features hyperlinks to other sites that contain background materials and enrichment activities that go along with this week's story. You will find craft activities, Science information, games, word search puzzles, and more. These links are provided as an extra opportunity for fun and learning for you and your second grader.
Bonus Activity: Click on the link after the ***starred*** text in the Useful links section to find the name of a carnivorous (meat eating) plant. Write the plant's name on a piece of paper and bring it to school to give to Ms. Pellarin. If you have the correct answer, she will give you a treat for your effort.
