Week of November 27, 2006
We have begun the third theme, Our World, in Language Arts. The five selections in this theme will allow students to discover and explore the fascinating cycles of our natural world.
Johnny Appleseed, by Pleasant deSpain, is the first selection of the new theme. It is written in the form of a play, with dialog, characters, and narration, and tells the story of John Chapman, the legendary pioneer who planted apple trees all over the American frontier.
Your child can review and practice the vocabulary words and definitions for Johnny Appleseed by clicking the Java Games link in the Quia activities section. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary words and meanings) from the game choices page to be referred to as needed during practice. Once your child can easily match the words and definitions, have him or her try playing the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in the context of sentences.
Have some fun with the Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page. It features hyperlinks to other sites that contain background materials and enrichment activities that go along with this week's story. These links are provided as an extra opportunity for fun and learning for you and your second grader.
NEW THIS WEEK! BONUS ACTIVITY!
Beginning this week, there will be a Bonus Activity on each Class Page. The purpose of these activities is to encourage children to use the Internet to find information, follow directions, and solve problems.
Directions for this week's Bonus Activity: Click on the link below the ***starred*** text in the Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page. Print out the Appleseed Math Activity sheet, write your name on it, and do it at home. When you have finished it, bring it to school and give it to Ms. Pellarin, and she will give you a small prize for your extra effort. Have fun!
Note - You may have to mouse click a little harder than usual this week to activate the links below, due to the special apple effect I put on the cursor. When you click, just hold your finger down on the left button a second longer than you usually do. I thought the apples were cool and went perfectly with our story; let me know if you like them.
