Lemonade for Sale by Stuart J. Murphy, tells of four friends who work together to earn money to repair their clubhouse. The children in the story follow the steps in a recipe for making lemonade, make graphs to chart their monetary progress toward their goal, and even make a new friend who becomes a member of their club. This story lends itself perfectly to graphmaking activities, so I have included links to some cool websites for that purpose. You'll find them, and other background and enrichment links, in the Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page.

Have your child take advantage of the vocabulary practice games that can be found in the Quia activities section. These games reinforce story vocabulary and make memorization of the list words and definitions painless. Once your child has learned the words and can match them with the definitions in the Java Games, he or she should play the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in sentence context.

Lemonade for Sale is the final story of Theme 2, Helping Hands. We will test Theme 2 vocabulary and comprehension the week of November 20th. Your child will need to review all the vocabulary word lists from the last five stories for the theme vocabulary test. I have designed a special Hangman Game for just that purpose; you can find it in the Quia activities section of this page.
