Week of November 6, 2006

Hedgehog learns there is more to being helpful than just good intentions, in this week's story, Hedgehog Bakes a Cake, by Maryann Macdonald. Rabbit, Squirrel, and Owl all try to help their friend Hedgehog bake a cake, but they end up accomplishing little and making a mess in spite of their good intentions. We will discuss ways children can truly be helpful as we read this selection in class.

Your child can review and practice the vocabulary words and definitions for Hedgehog Bakes a Cake by clicking the Java Games link in the Quia activities section. It may be helpful to print out the list of terms (vocabulary words and meanings) from the game choices page so your child can refer to them as needed during practice. Once your child can easily match the words and definitions, try playing the Columns Game where vocabulary words are used in the context of sentences.

There are lots of fun and interesting activities in this week's Useful links section at the bottom of the Class Page. You and your child can find information on everything from hedgehogs to baking a cake from scratch. There are games, paper hedgehog dolls, craft activities, and photographs. If you don't have time to do all of the activities now, bookmark this page for future reference.
