Alg 1 0507 - Completed Work

Welcome to Algebra 1 (0507) for the 2013-2014 academic year!

4/3/2014: Here is the key to the Polynomials portion of the review for tomorrow's test. The Scientific Notation portion was not returned to the binder from class today.

3/21/2014: Challenge Question:

Due by Wednesday, April 2 - Create a video that has you explaining what you are doing as you do it!

1/6/2014: Please note that the closing of school on Monday 1/6 and Tuesday 1/7 does NOT change the deadlines published for exam review packets being completed. Be aware of your deadlines and be sure to meet them.

1/3/2014: Did you make New Year's resolutions? A writer composed a list of resolutions for Catholics based on the teachings of Pope Francis in the past months. Do any of these resonate with you? New Year's resolutions: The Pope Francis list.

12/24/2014: Please note that I have posted a worksheet called Extra Practice: Review of Writing Linear Equations under both 12/20 (Extra) and 1/9 (Extra) to help you review for the coming test on Friday, January 10. There is an answer key at the end of the file, so you may check your own work. If you have struggled in any portion, please review that portion.

11/17/2013: It's a little before noon, but here are the Review Solutions and Extra Review Solutions for you to check your work with. Remember that if I do not hear from you that you are having trouble, it is safe for me to assume that you are ready for Tuesday's test - your own agreement in class!

11/6/2013: Bonus opportunity: For 0.25 point each, answer the following questions using an Educreations presentation (none, one or both) to show the question and explain why you are doing what you do, and how. All requirements of word problems must be met in order to gain this "point."

  1. What percentage grade do you have if your score is 37 out of 40? (Round to 1 decimal place.)
  2. How many points did Jamie earn on the test if she got 85% of 57 points? (Round to 1 decimal place.)
Expires at 5pm on Thursday, 11/7.

10/31/2013: Tomorrow is All Saints Day - a Holy Day of Obligation. Join the Saint Viator High School faith community in prayer at one of two Masses offered on Friday - before school at 7:30 am and after school at 3:05 pm - in Alumni Memorial Chapel on the 2nd floor. See you there!

10/14/2013: It's another bonus opportunity! This one expires on Thursday, October 17 at 3pm, so that it will be the last opportunity for the first quarter. Complete the following Elevator Puzzle while showing your work for all of the steps, explaining how you arrived at your answer as if you are teaching it to a class. You may complete the assignment in Notability and submit by e-mail, or print and complete in pencil to submit in writing, or via ShowMe or Educreations.

10/5/2013: You may have noticed, but I want to tell you directly...I have begun to post "Extra Practice" worksheets for the current topic in the final column of the weekly timelines below. These are exactly that, extra practice for you to use if you feel as if you could benefit from it, or just to have some more fun with math (woohoo!). Because this is the case, the final page of the worksheet will be the answer key, so that you are able to check your own answers, then you may ask me questions before class if you are not getting the same answer. Have fun!

I am excited to explore the growing world of mathematics with you during this year, and I trust that we will learn much when we open ourselves up to the possibility!

If you (or maybe your parents) are thinking about what you could do in the next few weeks to help you be prepared for Algebra 1, I have a bit of an answer for you: practice the basics. One of the ways that you can do that is to work on the website called Khan Academy. You may have heard of this site or used it already. The page to start with is the section on Arithmetic and Pre-Algebra, because that is what we need to know on our way in to Algebra 1. I encourage you to try out the practice modules, and watch some of the videos that are there to help refresh your memory on what you learned in math class already.

A good thing to do: sign up for a Khan Academy login, using your Saint Viator e-mail address when you get it, because the Saint Viator address is a Google account. That way, you can track your progress and see what you have done on the system. Bonus: you also earn energy points for everything you do, and badges for meeting specific goals. It is likely that registering for Khan Academy will be a part of our class, so you can get ahead by registering before school starts - remember you MUST use your Saint Viator e-mail and password.

You should probably know that one of the phrases I like to use when talking about math is "Have fun with it." So, enjoy the rest of your summer, and if you have a few minutes a day to practice some skills, "Have fun with it!"

See you on August 19!

7/25/2013: I just found this listing of summer math review topics, from Grade 6 through Calculus, listed on Khan Academy. Enjoy!

8/15/2013: As you prepare to start classes on Monday, you may begin to acquire the materials you will need for Algebra 1. The following are supplies that are required for our class:

  • pencils - with erasers, or a large eraser
  • a red pen for marking your own work
  • 4 sturdy two-pocket folders (one for each quarter)
  • calculator - According to the iPad/technology agreement, no iPads will be allowed on quizzes and tests, so you may have a calculator to use at that time as well as in class.

8/19/2013: It was good to meet you this afternoon and to prepare for our journey through Algebra 1 together. Do not forget to come prepared with your materials for class on Wednesday. We will begin the course right away.

8/21/2013: At this point in time, as we begin to get comfortable with the new technologies we will be using during the course of this year, the following guidelines will be in effect:

  • During the first week, the "Intro" worksheets (class notes) will be distributed on paper, as they are already ready for you. After the first week, the "Intros" will be posted to this page and you will be responsible for downloading them to your Notability app before the class period when we will use them.
  • If you choose, you may print the "Intro" sheets, but it is your responsibility to do so before the class period when we will use them.
  • At this point in time, until further notice, all "Worksheet"s will be printed and completed in hard copy. The teacher will provide the first copy for each student, but, if a student should misplace their "WS," the student is responsible to access this page to print out a new copy of the "WS." The teacher will not provide replacement copies for misplaced sheets.

8/24/2013: Still having trouble with fractions? Navigate to the bottom of this page, click on "Algebra 1 Course Resources," and explore the table toward the top called "Review Topics." So far, the only category is fractions, but boy are there a lot of fraction concepts to review! Use the videos (all the blue links) and the practice exercises (more blue links) to help you with these topics. BONUS OPPORTUNITY #1: Follow the directions posted in Register for Khan Academy to register for Khan Academy, but use the coach code WD3WNB instead to get Algebra 1 - 0507, before Monday morning and earn 1 quiz point.
