Writing:
The students have begun researching an inventor or explorer for their Fifth Grade Research project. The skill for each part of this assignment will be taught in class the week that it is due, however, students will need to complete work on the project at home. These skills include: notetaking and collecting information on a gathering grid; noting sources on a bibliography; outlining; and writing a research paper with an interesting lead and closing, and paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details. The expectations for the research paper and oral presentation are explained in the link below (Research Project Info). This will also be an opportunity for students to practice using time management skills as they complete each part of the assignment on the given date. With Writing as part of our Reading/Language Arts block, students will continue to write about their reading, as well.
Science:
Students completed the last three questions of the LIGHT Unit Test the week after Spring Break. They had an opportunity to practice using a light microscope, which we will use more during our LIVING THINGS unit. Last week students learned about the structure of plant and animal cells, and created a model using gelatin, birdseed, peanuts, and balloons. Next, they will learn about the FIVE KINGDOMS: Moneran, Protists, Fungi, Plants & Animals. Each students will create a flip book with drawings and notes about each kingdom. During our plant study, we will dissect a flower, as we review the parts and functions of each. We will be raising butterflies, so we can observe the changes that take place during metamorphosis. We are looking forward to our field trip to the Virginia Living Museum on May 6th. During our visit, we will enjoy a self guided tour of a variety of habitats and the program "Inside Skeletons." Please encourage your student to review Science notes (especially vocabulary) and activities each day. A student can show true understanding of a science word or concept if he/she can explain it to someone else in their own words.
Reading/Spelling:
The week of April 27th we will review skills from Unit 5, while reading historical fiction and biographies. The unit test will be given on Friday, May 1st. Thank you for continuing to encourage your child to read independently! This daily practice gives students the opportunity to practice the skills we work on in class. Please also study the Vocabulary Words, located in a link below for each week's story.
The weekly Spelling words are located below on the link for "Spelling Words." Please review spelling words with your student. These Spelling words are listed on the "Family Times" which is sent home the Friday prior to the test, so each student has the opportunity to "study ahead" for the pretest on Monday. When a student earns 100% on the pretest, that child will only spell the bonus words (weekly vocabulary words) on Friday's post test. All students will be asked to write the bonus words, and will have an extra point for each word correctly spelled added to their test score.
*Note: Graded papers will continue to be sent home on Mondays in a folder. Please make sure to review these papers with your child, sign and return the folder by Wednesday. Thank you for all your support!
