Journal Response to Poetry:

Writing a journal response about a poem or a song involves paying closer attention to language than maybe you have in the past.  Here's your list of things to write about:

(1) OBSERVATIONS:  What do you notice about the poem?  How is it structured?  What figures of speech does it contain? Metaphor?  Simile?  Personification?  Imagery?

(2) REACTIONS:  Do you like the poem/song?  What lines strike you?  What words really ring true for you?

(3) QUESTIONS:  What do you have questions about?  Are there words that don't make sense?  Does the poem/song raise questions about humanity?

(4) CONNECTIONS:  What does the poem/song remind you of?  Are there issues in your life or in the world in general that the poem comments on?

REMEMBER, a journal response is NOT a summary.  It's a chance for you to develop and explore your ideas about the text.
