The progress toward realism illustrated in a comparison of korai
.
Some would argue that the Greeks influenced western art more than any other culture. There's no denying that they blazed a trail in many areas, and our indebtedness is still evident all around us today. We won't be able to cover Greek art in detail in just four hours - some people devote their entire lives to studying it! But we will be able to get a feel for this vibrant ancient culture and the progress of their artistic achievement.
Our tour will take us half way around the planet and back 3,000 years in time. We'll begin with first period of vibrant Greek creativity, the Bronze Age, and continue through the Dark Age and the Archaic period to the perfection of the Classical period. We'll end with the realism and flamboyance of the Hellenistic period, which followed the conquests of Alexander the Great.
