Remarkably, the Greeks seemed to define themselves by conflict, though only the Spartans truly developed a standing professional army prior to the rise of Macedonia. And yet many of the strange characteristics of Spartan society were the reason for its demise. We'll cover an enormous amount of time in this workshop - from what we know of warfare in Bronze Age Greece through the siege warfare of the Hellenistic period. Along the way we'll investigate:
- Arms and Armor
- Battle Tactics
- Specific defining conflicts in the history of the Greeks
- Siege Warfare
Session Topics:
- Warfare in Early Greece: The Bronze Age and the Greek Dark Ages
- The Hoplites and the Rise and Fall of Athens
- The Late Classical Period and the Conquests of Alexander the Great
- Greek Siege Warfare
Activities
The numbered activities below are keyed to the material presented in each of our four sessions. They're a fun way to review and remember the material. Be sure to play them more than once - there are more questions that you'll see in just one play.
