¡HOLA! Bienvenidos al mundo del español aquí en el colegio de Shawnee. HELLO! Welcome to the world of Spanish here at Shawnee.

FIVE years of Spanish are offered at Shawnee. Spanish I, II, III, IV, and V- Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture, our AP year of study!
Advanced language arts students have the opportunity to begin their study of Spanish in the eighth grade as a middle school student, and continuing to complete five years of study. After five years of study, most students take the Advanced Placement Spanish test, and receive valuable college credit for their efforts during middle/high school! Also, our Spanish students go on to do quite well on their college foreign language placement exams and 'test out' of semesters of college foreign language requirements, and often completely out of the requirement itself, sometimes receiving credit for what they learned while at Shawnee!

Every year, we have students that go on to major, double major, or minor in Spanish, as well as countless students that are using Spanish in travel and in their careers in healthcare/medical professions, education and social work, law enforcement, manufacturing, engineering, business, missionary work...you name it! Given that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the USA, being able to speak and read Spanish is one of the most useful skills that students can gain for use now and in their futures!!!

We have three experienced and enthusiastic Spanish teachers at Shawnee to serve our students as well as a very active Spanish Club, Shawnee High School's largest academic club, which offers our students fun activities and weekend day trips to promote learning about Hispanic language and culture. Students learn through a variety of methods, including technology, music, games, speaking partner communicative activities, crafts, internet, and use of puppets.

It is recommended that students that decide to take a foreign language have strong skills in English language arts, especially grammar and spelling skills, and the academic maturity to study outside of class and complete homework regularly. Good memorization skills are important, as is the academic maturity to complete homework accurately and practice new skills at home each evening. Shawnee Spanish classes are excellent preparation for development of skills for life use and college preparation and emphasize accuracy and USE!

WHY STUDY SPANISH???

Today, Spanish rivals English as the language of choice in the Americas with more than 250 million native Spanish speakers in the Caribbean, Central America, South America and North America. One out of every six people living in the United States is Hispanic. In the past, learning Spanish used to be a way to open doors, but now it is often a necessity! Each year our department gets phone calls and emails from local businesses asking for help finding workers that demonstrate bilingual fluency in English and Spanish! The need is definitely there.

Big business has invested heavily in Latin America. Unlike Europe and Asia where business is sometimes conducted in English, in Latin America you need to speak Spanish and be familiar with the culture to be successful. 300 million people speak Spanish making it one of the largest markets for businesses and one of the most useful languages in the world.

27.7 million people living in the USA are Hispanic. Hispanics are the largest minority population in the USA. If you live in America, the chances that you can use your Spanish frequently in your daily life are larger than that of any other language you might study. That's why Spanish is the #1 studied foreign language in our country.

A LANGUAGE YOU WILL USE!

Employers are seeking applicants who can speak Spanish in nearly every profession (medical, police/fire, public service, legal, education, sales, etc.). The chances that your neighbor will speak Spanish are greater than him/her speaking any other foreign language. Because of its Latin roots, Spanish is one of the easier languages for an English speaker to learn. It is estimated that U.S. citizens spend more foreign travel time in Spanish speaking countries than any other foreign country.

Spanish is the official language of 21 countries, and is spoken by many people throughout the world, and by many in our community.
