Greetings, and welcome to the Community Service Program for 2011-2012! I'm Ms. Lowes, Assistant Principal and Program Coordinator. Please use this website to help you have a fun, easy and help-full service experience. Your Advisory class, Community Service Teacher, daily announcements and the Community Service Bulletin Board (844) are also sources for these facts and forms.
SUMMER PROJECT 2011 is worth 6 hours!
Community Service should be enjoyable, something to do with friends, easy to accomplish, and, of course, helpful to someone else. To make it so, you might need a little help yourself, at times. See me at the College Office (660, 6th Floor). You can also leave permission forms in my Teachers' Lounge (852) mailbox, leave me a phone message at ext. 7426, or send me a message in PupilPath. I'll respond to you within a day.
Don't be shy with questions or problems. Principal Larson, Assistant Principals Dingman and Parris, Guidance Counselors Garcia-Vanderhorst and Jackson, Mr. Pesola, (Community Service Day Coordinator & Advisor of BuildOn Club and Citizen Schools) and other club advisors and teachers will also help you. Just ask to get the help you need.
Marble Hill School for International Studies is committed to involving its students and faculty in community service. All eleventh and twelfth grade students are required to provide non-paid service in community agencies during the Wednesday Community Service Block, 1-5 pm. The opportunity to serve those in need contributes not only to the community, but also to the growth of each individual who performs service. Most colleges, universities and potential employers are looking for strong community service participation. Volunteer work is also part of United We Serve, President Obama’s national service initiative, asking for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most urgent national problems like poverty and economic recovery. This academic requirement will provide the opportunity for all students to have a positive impact on our community and to prepare for the future.
Goals
• Provide a hands-on learning experience for students to develop interpersonal skills
• To have students focus on giving their efforts and time to address community needs
• To increase students’ awareness of their relationship with ever-widening circles of society
• To have all students participate in their community and understand that service is an on-going part of life
Requirements
• 54 service hours per year in the eleventh and twelfth grades (2 hours per week on Wednesdays, or 4 hours per week during the school day--Community Service Wednesdays Calendar)
• Submit Parent Permission Form to Ms. Lowes by Wednesday, September 28th.
• Submit to Community Service (CS) Teacher:
o Completed Marking Period Time Sheets
o Semester Agency Evaluation of Student (COMING SOON!)
o Semester Student Self-assessment & Reflection (COMING SOON, too.)
Code of Behavior
• Be Reliable: show up when expected unless you have called in advance with other arrangements
• Be on time: this will benefit both student and agency when engaged in volunteering
• Be flexible: it is possible that the tasks planned may have changed; go with the flow
• Be respectful: show courtesy and respect to the supervisor and clients being served
• Be professional: dress and act appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions--FAQs
FORMS
1) Be responsible about meeting marking period and semester deadlines for forms, on the Community Service Program Calendar
2) To receive credit for your service hours, first submit the completed Parent Permission Form to me (Ms. Lowes). CS is like taking a weekly field trip, so this form shows your service schedule, location and travel directions to your family and the school. Your safety and security come first, which is why your credit depends on submitting these forms to the school with current and accurate information.
3) If want or need to change your site, see me. Together, we'll end your service at your original site, find you a new site, and you will submit new Parent Permission Form to me (Ms. Lowes).
4) Use the Marking Period Time Sheet to keep track of your volunteer hours each marking period. You fill out the form completely. Your Site Supervisor puts his/her signature when you serve. Submit Time Sheets to your CS Teacher before the end of each marking period. (We'll remind you.)
5) To get your semester grade and class credit, you will also submit a completed Agency Evaluation of Student and Self-Evaluation & Reflection (both COMING SOON) to your CS Teacher on or before the last Wednesday of each marking period.
FOR JUNIORS & SENIORS "NEW" TO COMMUNITY SERVICE CLASS:
Your Advisory teachers are a source of information and support for you while you do Community Service. Often, they are the teacher who grades you for Community Service.
