Course Description
Medical Terminology is designed to help students learn health care language and is presented in logical order, beginning with each body system’s anatomy and physiology and progressing through pathology, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic intervention, and finally pharmacology. Concepts, terms, and abbreviations for a topic are also presented to the students. Students will participate in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) where special emphasis is placed employability as well as leadership skills.
*Students enrolled in the Medical Terminology class can earn Dual Enrollment credit through Virginia Highlands Community College.*
Course Objectives
Students planning to enroll in other Health Science courses will be able to have entrance level knowledge and working understanding of the body systems. Students will learn how medical terms are developed, their meaning(s), combining forms, prefixes, suffixes and definitions. Understanding of the Integumentary, Musculoskeletal, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Nervous, Urinary, Reproductive, Blood, Digestive, Endocrine, and Sensory Systems are taught. Other terminology in Oncology, Psychiatry, Human Development, Pharmacology, and Dentistry is taught. Leadership skills and All Aspects of Industry are emphasized.
Instructional Philosophy
This course will consist of lecture, class discussion, demonstrations, computer lessons, and practice of skills. Students will work with partners much of the time. Assignments will require students to use science, communication, memorization, and language art skills.
Grading Scale
Assessment will be based on scores achieved on written test, homework, projects, and daily grades. Daily grades will be given for attitude, performance of skills, productive use of class time, class participation, performing daily cleanup, and laboratory organization assignments. This course grading scale is 100-93 (A), 92-85 (B), 84-77 (C), 76-70 (D), below 70 (F).
Make-Up Assignments
Students will be required to make up any work missed due to absences in order to receive a passing grade for the day or days missed. It is the responsibility of the student to request make-up assignments. Ample opportunity will be given to turn in the makeup assignment. Make-up work not done by the scheduled date will result in a “0” for the day or days absent.
