Introduction to Health and Medical Sciences (8302)
Course Description
This 36 week course introduces the student to a variety of health care careers and develops basic skills required in all health and medical sciences. It is designed to help students understand the key elements of the U.S. health care system and to learn basic health care terminology, anatomy and physiology for each body system, pathologies, diagnostic and clinical procedures, therapeutic interventions, and the fundamentals of traumatic and medical emergency care. Throughout the course, instruction will emphasize safety, cleanliness, asepsis, professionalism, accountability, and efficiency within the health care environment. Students also begin gaining job-seeking skills for entry into the health and medical sciences field. In addition, instruction may include the basics of medical laboratory procedures, pharmacology fundamentals, biotechnology concepts, and communication skills essential for providing quality patient care.Students will participate in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) where special emphasis is placed employability as well as leadership skills.
Introduction to Health & Medical Sciences is the first of four courses available to students in the Washington County Public Schools at the secondary level. One post secondary class is offered at the Adult Skill Center. This course is recommended for 9th, 10th, 11th, and12th grade students interested in a health care career.
Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the field of health occupations. The student who successfully completes this course will have basic entry-level knowledge and skills that can be used in several different health care careers.
Instructional Philosophy
This course will consist of lecture, class discussion, demonstrations, and practice of skills. Students will work with partners much of the time. Assignments will require students to use mathematical, science, communication, and language art skills.
Grading Scale
Assessment will be based on scores achieved on written test, homework, projects, and daily grades. Daily grades will be given for attitude, performance of skills, productive use of class time, class participation, performing daily cleanup, and laboratory organization assignments. This course grading scale is 100-93 (A), 92-85 (B), 84-77 (C), 76-70 (D), below 70 (F).
Make-Up Assignments
Students will be required to make up any work missed due to absences in order to receive a passing grade for the day or days missed. It is the responsibility of the student to request make-up assignments. Ample opportunity will be given to turn in the makeup assignment. Make-up work not done by the scheduled date will result in a “0” for the day or days absent.
