SIMILE A simile compares two things using the words “like” or “as.” Her hair shone like a brilliant star. The witches’ lips cracked like dry earth. Their kite flew as high as a cloud. METAPHOR A metaphor calls one thing another (without using “like” or “as”). Her feet were boats. A skyscraper is a towering mountain. The teams were snarling tigers. PERSONIFICATION Personification gives human qualities to animals, ideas, or things. The teapot sang a lively tune. The mother dog laughed at her playful puppies. Trees were dancing in the forest.
