Apollo 13, the Movie (Start on Fri., finish in 2012)
In science class, we have been exploring the strategies used to solve the problems encountered as the astronauts made their way back to Earth. These included:
* making a model
* working backwards
* drawing diagrams
* trial and error
* estimate
* re-read the problem
* take a break and redo the problem
These carefully conceived strategies and masterfully executed efforts helped Mission Control in Houston and the astronauts save the mission and it made for an exciting movie. The movie also works from other perspectives, too, and these we can discuss from an "English class perspective." In a piece of writing not shorter than 180 words, describe how the movie uses elements of storyteling and moviemaking, such as:
* foreshadowing,
* characters who are too proud (hubristic) taking a fall,
* irony,
* the setting and time period (early 1970s),
* contrasts, such as the human vs. machine, or the team vs. the individual,
* role of women as strong or weak,
* the debate about funding expensive space programs.
