Quiz 2: Wishful thinking
In this quiz, you will complete a wish by supplying a verb in the noun clause following the verb wish. Use the verb given in parentheses. Use past or past perfect forms of verbs to express unreal present or past. Ask yourself these questions about the verb before completing each item: 1) Does it refer to present or future time? If so, does the meaning require "could" or "would"? 2) Does the verb refer to a simultaneous past time or an earlier past time? 3) Does the meaning require a POSITIVE or a NEGATIVE verb? In some wishes about the unreal (improbable)present, you will need the auxiliary verb COULD or WOULD. Read carefully for meaning. Remember that we wish for UNREAL, IMPROBABLE, or IMPOSSIBLE events and that WERE is the only subjunctive form for the verb BE.
