Passive verbs = a form of “to be” + past participle verb
Eliminate all “to be” verbs – they are weak!
IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, BE, AM, BEEN
Change the passive verbs in each sentence to active verbs (Make sure to keep the same meaning):
1. Elie and his family were sent to live in the ghetto.
2. The camp was bombed by the Allied forces.
3. Elie’s imprisonment was ended by the American tank.
4. Elie was born in Sighet.
5. Jews were not allowed to play German music.
6. Elie’s gold crown was removed.
7. The days were spent in the factory.
8. The prisoners were derided.
9. His shoes were not noticed.
10. We were transferred in the winter.
