Polyphemus is a Cyclops, a member of a lawless race of one-eyed giants who do not fear the gods. He is the son of Poseidon. Odysseus saves himself and his remaining men by poking Polyphemus' eye out. Polyphemus calls on his father to make Odysseus' journey a painful one.
Circe is a goddess who turns men into pigs. Odysseus escapes by eating moly and stays with her for a year. She lives on Aeaea and is the daughter of the Sun God.
Calypso, "the Concealer", lives on Ogygia and holds Odysseus captive for seven years, until Hermes tells her she must release him.
Odysseus is required to visit the Underworld and speak to Teiresias.
