Yr. 8 Dialogue: testāmentum Barbillī (Barbillus's Will)

GALATEA: (īrāta)cūr hūc vēnistī? nōs omnēs tē dēspicimus, quod tū Barbillum sānāre nōn poterās.

[(angrily) Why have you come here? We all despise you, because you couldn't cure Barbillus.]

PETRO: ego hūc vēnī, quod tibi aliquid dīcere volō.

[I have come here because I want to tell you something.]

GALATEA: quid est?

[What is it?]

PETRO: testāmentum Barbillī vīdī.

[I have seen Barbillus's will.]

GALATEA: (īram dēpōnit) ō dulcissime, quam libenter tē vidēmus. dīc nōbīs quam celerrimē dē testāmentō! quid Barbillus nōbīs relīquit?

[(She drops her anger.) O, my dear man, how delighted we are to see you! Tell as quickly as possible about the will! What did Barbillus leave us?]

PETRO: Barbillus Aristōnī nūllam pecūniam relīquit, sed tragoediās, quās Aristō scrīpsit, reddidit.

[Barbillus didn't leave Aristo any money, but he returned the tragedies that Aristo wrote.]

GALATEA: optimē fēcit Barbillus. Barbillus Aristōnī tragoediās sōlum relīquit quod Aristō nihil aliud cūrat. sine dubiō Barbillus mihi multam pecūniam relīquit quod ego prudentior sum quam marītus meus.

[Barbillus did very well. Barbillus only left Aristo the tragedies because Aristo doesn't care about anything else. Without doubt Barbillus left me a lot of money, because I am more prudent than my husband.]

PETRO: Barbillus fīliae tuae gemmās pretiōsās, quās ā mercātōre Syriō ēmerat, relīquit.

[Barbillus left your daughter some precious gems which he had bought from the merchan Syrius.]

[It is not fitting for Helena to have the jewels. Helen is stupider than her father. It is safer to hand Helena's jewels over to me. But why don't you say anything about me, Petro? What did Barbillus leave me? (angry because Petro does not answer) Tell me, you very stupid man!]

PETRO: nihil tibi relīquit.

[He didn't leave you anything.]

GALATEA: mehercule!

[Heavens above! -- literally, by Hercules!]
