Course Description
In French II, students continue to develop their communicative and cultural competence by interacting orally and in writing with other speakers of the target language, understanding oral and written messages in the language, and making oral and written presentations in the language. They begin to show a greater level of accuracy when using basic language structures, and they are exposed to more complex features of the language. They continue to focus on communicating about their immediate world and daily activities. They read material on familiar topics and write short, directed compositions. Emphasis continues to be placed on use of French in the classroom as exclusively as possible as well as on use of authentic materials to learn about the French language and francophone culture(s).

Curriculum
The course curriculum will follow that denoted in the pacing guide for French II for Henrico County Public Schools available in School Space, on our class Quia website, and in our class Google Drive folder named DRHS French II 1516.
Text
French II students will be employing Discovering French, Book 2 and other resources.
Supply List
-1 pack of Expo whiteboard markers (for use on personal whiteboards)
-1 binder with pockets or folder for organizing handouts
-3” x 5” index cards to be used as flash cards in class and at home (as needed throughout year)
Evaluation
Student progress will be evaluated on the basis of the following formula:
Test Average - 40% (Tests/Major Projects)
Quiz Average - 30% (Quizzes/Classwork)
Homework - 15% (Daily Homework Grades)
Oral Proficiency - 15% (Daily Participation/Discussion Grades)
Class Rules (In addition to the overall regulations of Deep Run High School)
RESPECT yourself! Do not sell yourself short! You can master French if you are focused and determined.
RESPECT others! Do not waste their time with unnecessary distraction, unwelcomed comments or derision!
RESPECT our classroom! Do not destroy our public property or resources!
RESPECT our subject! Make sure that your every thought, word, and deed in class are devoted to its mastery.
RESPECT our time together! We will endeavor to make every moment count.
Deep Run Retesting Policy
Any student who fails a major project/assessment may be required, at the teacher’s discretion, to attend remediation sessions before school, during extended study, or after school—the teacher and student should arrange for this remediation session. If the student passes the reassessment, they will be given a passing grade, although the grade does not have to be as high as the grade earned on the reassessment. If a student wishes to retake a failed assessment or redo a failed project, they must ask the teacher within one week of receiving the failing grade.
Homework
A daily grade will be assigned for homework completion. The following possible grades will be assessed:
100-The student has completed the homework assignment to the very best of his/her ability in a quality
manner and done his/her own work in the manner specified by the teacher.
70-The student has made up homework that was not completed initially.
0-The student has not completed the homework assignment.
Integrity
A student is best able to learn by doing. Unfortunately our increased technological capability in recent years has presented our students with a number of temptations to avoid doing the right thing. Throughout the year students will be guided as closely as possible to avoid doing things that would cause them to commit integrity violations which in later life could cause them to be expelled from a college or to lose a job. More importantly academic dishonesty deprives students of the opportunity to learn the subject at hand and to develop the critical thinking skills vital to success in later life. In general Latin students should abide by the following guidelines:
- Avoid plagiarism! Passing someone else’s work off as your own is stealing. Major assignments will be submitted this year through turnitin.com.
- Online French translators may not be used! Students in the past few years have been crunching whole texts into online dictionaries, thereby converting them into translators, and then passing it off as their own work. This is completely unacceptable! Not only is the quality of the work very poor indeed, but one cannot learn Latin that way.
- Keep your eyes on your own paper! Your teacher wants to determine what YOU know and understand using assessments.
- Keep all books, notebooks, articles of clothing, and bags off the desk when taking an assessment.
- Do not even construct cheat sheets or other materials which could be used to give you an unfair advantage on an assessment. These serve as excellent evidence of integrity violations.
- Keep your honor and integrity intact. These are qualities which no one can ever take from you!
