Lesson 1 Key Terms

1.  Backstage view Contains many of the commands that were on the File menu in previous versions of Microsoft Access and enables you to create a new database, create a database from a template, open an existing database, view and edit database properties, manage user accounts, and perform many database maintenance tasks.

2.  badges Small square labels that contain KeyTips.

3.  Change Help Location menu A menu that enables you to choose between searching help topics online and help topics offline.

4.  database A tool for collecting and organizing information.

5.  database management system (DBMS) A system for managing data that allows the user to store, retrieve, and analyze information.

6.  datasheet A visual representation of the data contained in a table or of the results returned by a query.

7.  data type The kind of information a field contains—whether text, number, date/time, or some other type.

8.  dialog box launcher A small arrow in the lower-right corner of a group that you click to launch a dialog box.

9.  field A column in a database table.

10. File tab A tab that displays the Backstage view and contains a menu of commands that you can use for the common tasks performed with your database files—such as opening, saving, and printing.

11. form A database object that simplifies the process of entering, editing, and displaying data.

12. groups Collections of records separated visually and displayed with its introductory or summary information.

13. KeyTip Small letters and numbers that display on the Ribbon when you press Alt; used for executing commands with the keyboard.

14. normal forms The standards and guidelines of database design that can be used to determine if a database is structured correctly.

15. normalization The process of applying rules to a database design to ensure that information is divided into the appropriate tables.

16. objects Database elements, such as tables, queries, forms, and reports.

17. primary key The column in a database that uniquely identifies each row.

18. query A database object that enables stored data to be searched and retrieved.

19. Quick Access Toolbar A toolbar at the top left of the screen that contains the commands that you use most often—such as Save, Undo, Redo, and Print.

20. record A row in a database table.

21. redundant data Duplicate information in a database.

22. relational database A group of database tables that is connected or linked by a defined relationship that ties the information together.

23. report A database object that presents information in a format that is easy to read and print.

24. Ribbon A graphic band across the top of the screen that contains tabs and groups of commands.

25. tab An area of activity on the Ribbon.

26. table The most basic database object; stores data in categories.
