Separation
Physical separation: being in a different culture basic to all other forms of separation
Language:
Cultural differences with respect to:
Emotional
Lack of communication between partners: why is it cultural? What causes it to be cultural? What stories contain this? Give examples. Give examples of the cultural differences that cause this separation. Specific examples from the stories.
In Sexy: example:
Indian / American
Indian born and Indian born
Indian born but raised in America and American born Indian
All represent differences based on values and perspectives that others cannot share.
Separation from the mainstream culture
What role does this play for immigrants in the mainstream culture?
Expectations with respect to the role of work for women or
Expectations for women’s roles in marriage, relationships
Expectations for food: Indian culture: fresh food, no pizza from the store: etc. Preparation of food. Time spent / fast food generation like Eliot.
Expectations for driving: how that create separation from society or a partner
Expectations for independence in the new cultural. Indivualism versus collectivism. Problems caused by this. Lack of confidence: stay home, don’t go anywhere, stay in the local culture, are dependent on others all the time.
Dress: Indians different: saris for women and male Indian male attire. Men mostly are mostly in western dress. Shows how much people are invested in the other culture.
Question:
Discuss how the theme of separation is treated in the movie, “ The Namesake” and one other story from “ Interpreter of Maladies” OR how it is treated in two of the stories from “ Interpreter of Maladies.”
Midterm will be open book but in class. Homework: All the readings in Chapter 4 if you have time. However, you only need to summarize the first two for Monday. Put the journal responses online in nicenet. Take a look at the download I gave you in class. We will go over it Monday and then you can analyze it yourself for homework for Tuesday.

Writing from Experience Essay Due
Two summaries for first two essays in Guidelines ch. 4 due. ( hand in )
In class: Discussion of topic and argument structure
Homework: argument structure paper for homework and essays 3 and 4.
Tuesday: Debate on topic ( You will get it ahead of time ).
Homework: language of arguing and post your journal responses to essays 3 and 4. Write the summaries for those essays to hand in
Wednesday; Organizing your argument essay: Homework: Essay 5 in Guidelines
Read " Interpreter of Maladies" and " A Real Durwan" for tomorrow.
Thursday: Presentations and quiz on the stories. Prep. for midterm argument essay.
MONDAY: MIDTERM. Please note the change of date. This is to give you a little bit more time to prepare.
