Physical Education Handbook


PURPOSE
The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint you and your parents with the procedures, rules, and regulations that will help you do your best job during your enrollment in physical education.

DRESS CODE
1. All students will be required to wear a BHS P.E. uniform consisting of royal blue shorts and grey t-shirt. These may be purchased through A.S.B.
2. Tennis shoes
3. Royal blue, black or gray sweat clothes (white t-shirt and royal blue/black gym shorts must be worn underneath sweats)
4. No undergarments should be visible
5. Varsity Athletes must dress out on game day, but do not have to participate, providing they dress with their varsity top/jersey so the coach can identify team members. Frosh/Soph or JV must dress out and participate on game day
6. All gym gear should be marked with your name
7. Teacher’s aides must dress for P.E.
8. Students who cannot afford a gym outfit should see the coach

NON-DRESS
1. All students are expected to dress for P.E.
2. Students requested to dress, but refuse, will be given one mile to run under 10 minutes for makeup of the non-dress
3. First non-dress will result in a loss of points. Second non-dress will result in student being sent to OCS. Each non-dress thereafter will result in student being sent to OCS and being assigned one hour of detention. This continues per quarter.
4. Only one non dress per quarter can be made up.

GRADING SYSTEM
100 points per quarter may be earned by demonstrating proficiency in the selected competencies. A maximum of two (2) points per day can be earned for participation and ready points each day. See grading as follows:

1. Participation
a. The student will demonstrate selected game/activity by class participation at 100% of their ability as evident by teacher observation and/or test. One point per day (45 points per quarter)
2. Ready points
a. The student will demonstrate punctuality skills and safety/hygiene skills as evident by being dressed in the proper clean gym uniforms in the assigned roll call area. One point per day (45 points per quarter)
3. Skills testing
a. The student will demonstrate mastery of sports skills by passing a sport skill and/or fitness test (7 points per quarter)
4. Subjective Points
a. The students will demonstrate 100% effort and/or improvement during class participation as evident by teacher observation and/or
test. (3 points per quarter)
5. Excessive Non-dress/Absences
a. Excessive non-dress will result in a failing grade. 5 non-dress per quarter or 10 non-dress per semester.
b. Excessive absences will result in a failing grade. Nine (9) per
quarter/total of eighteen (18) per semester.
6. Grading Scale
100-95 A
94-90 B
89-85 C
84-80 D
79- F

MAKE UP POINTS
1. All absences (excused or unexcused) must be made up.
2. Only one (1) non-dress may be made up per quarter.
3. A max of three (3) make-ups may be made up per day.
4. Two participation points may be made by running a 10-minute mile or
better under the supervision of an instructor or aide.
5. Athletes may make up participation points by having their coach write a note verifying that they had put in a desired time in practice. (Max make
up three (3) days per quarter) from any coach.
6. Two points may be made up by other selected activities, such as attending school activities.
7. Other make up requirements:
a. Make up work may not be completed during regularly scheduled P.E. class time.
b. All make up works must be completed one week before the end of the quarter.
c. All medical days must be made up.
d. See the instructor regarding any make up work. Request for all make up work is the responsibility of the student.
e. Refusal to participate, points cannot be made up.
f. Independent study counts as ½ make up.
g. If absent, make-up work will be completed upon returning to school (NO written assignments)

PARENT/DOCTOR EXCUSES
1. Notes from a parent/guardian may excuse individuals from strenuous
exercise or from exposure to bad weather, however, no student is excused from dressing for P.E. without teacher’s consent.
2. Notes from a parent/guardian may only excuse students for up to two (2)
days.
3. All students must have a doctor’s note to be excused from P.E. activities
for more than two (2) days and shall report to the teacher for any make
up work upon the doctor’s license.
4. Doctor excused and/or limited P.E. students must be released by a written
note from the doctor before returning to P.E.
5. Same day medical excuses will be taken care of on roll call, at this time
the student will indicate the nature of their problem before the P.E.
activity period starts. (All the same day excuses must be made up.)
6. Students with extended medical excuses will receive a passing grade.
7. All injuries should be reported to the coach before leaving P.E.

TRUANCY
1. Students are truant if the student fails to attend class; therefore
cannot acquire the points for the day. (2 pts.)
2. Students are truant if the student leaves class without the instructor’s
permission.
3. Students are truant if the student leaves the locker room area before the passing bell rings.
4. Students are truant if the student fails to present admit slips within 3 days
of being absent.
5. A truancy may not be made up.

TARDIES
1. Students are tardy if they are late to roll call. (Not on their numbers)
2. Students are tardy if they enter the locker room after the tardy bell rings.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS
Students will provide their own COMBINATION lock to be used for P.E.
1. Keep your combination to yourself
2. Do not share locks or lockers
3. Each student will be issued a small gym locker to put his/her gym clothes in. Do not leave clothes or gear in a large “D” street locker except during your P.E. period, or it will be removed at your expense.
4. Always double check if your locker is locked. 90% of all missing gear is due to students who leave their locks unlocked or share lockers.
5. Do not leave your street clothes in a locker that is not locked.
6. It is advisable to have not items of value in your P.E. locker since theft is difficult to control. The school will not be responsible for valuables that are lost or stolen.

LOCKER ROOM SAFETY/CONDUCT
1. No glass containers allowed in the locker room
2. No food or drinks in the locker room (water is OK)
3. Jewelry should not be worn during P.E. class. This includes watches and earrings
4. Horseplay is forbidden
5. Do not climb or sit on the lockers
6. Throwing objects is forbidden while in the locker room
7. No sprays of any kind
8. No cellular phones in the locker room
9. Close lockers when finished dressing
10. Flush toilets after using restroom
11. Pick up after yourself
12. Problems of any nature are to be reported to the coach
13. Parents will be responsible to pay for any damages or destruction to school property!

SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS
The requirements stated pertaining to medical excuses and non-dresses may at first seem to be extreme measures, however, these requirements will help to eliminate problems for students who attempt to do as little as possible in class and fail to achieve the stated competencies.
