  -spectacular - meant to impress
  -irregular shapes
  -large scale
  -action in the moment
  -moment of climax
  -gory, gruesome details
  -lots of emotion, facial expression
  -like the theater
         -stage poses, stage curtains, stage lighting (spotlight effect)
  -contrasting lights & darks
  -mixed media (mixing the materials)
  -mixed art forms (painting, sculpture & architecture overlap)
  -outward, forward extension
         (bringing the art into the viewer's space)
  -trompe l'oeil - trick the eye illusions
  -oil painting - rich color
  -separation of protestant and catholic
         -protestants reject religious art in favor of landscape, still life, etc.
         -catholics embrace religious art
  -censorship of religious art
         -"no unnecessary nudity"
         -"must be true to the written text"

BERNINI

                                     outward (physically & energy wise)

  -took 7 years
  -self-described as the artist's most beautiful work
  - baroque traits:  mixing materials, mixing art forms
                           rich, spectacular, wow
                           irregular shapes - broken pediment, doubled columns
                           like the theater
                                 -stage
                                 -spot light from hidden window
                                 -donors are the "audience"
                           use of trompe l'oeil
                                  -yellow glass on window = heavenly light of God
                                 
   -shows ecstasy of St. Therea
        -a mystic nun who experienced visions
              (touched by an angel and levitating)
        -most intense moment
        -action thru swirling drapery
        -extreme facial expression
        -another trompe l'oeil - hidden support to appear actually floating

   -donors were Cornaro
   -meant to be burial chapel
   -donors included - carved into side walls as if in the theater balcony

APOLLO & DAPHNE
    -subject of mythology
    -a garden statue

BERNINI AT ST. PETER'S (VATICAN)
    -designed the entrance to cathedral
    -enormous space to be impressive
    -gives view to Michelangelo's dome
    -lots of saints - very anti-protestant
    -irregular shapes - trapezoid & oval

    -symbolism of design - like a chi rho
                                   -  keyhole shape represents St. Peter
                                   - a "mother's embrance"

    -Baldachin - bronze, canopy looking sculpture
                    - marks the grace of St. Peter
                    - bronze - some came from the Parthenon
                    - 100' tall
                    - columns twist to create movement
                   
    -St. Peter's throne - enormous reliquary (anti-protestant)

RUBENS
    -painter
    -well-travelled, worked in numerous countries
    -does both protestant & catholic subjects
    -known for painting hefty women - called "rubenesque"

LOUIS XIV
     -called the Sun King
     -Palace of Versailles built as his residence
     -invited French aristocracy to live at court
      (thus he kept a watchful eye on their activities)
     -like a magnificent stage with Louis as the actor performing as the Sun King
     -very large, 2000 rooms & 500 yds long
     -rich & showy with overlapping materials
     -Hall of Mirrors - where Louis met with visitors
     -40 yrs to build, 30,000 workers
     -became a magnet for people with talent, turned France into the new important
      art center of Europe
