Welcome to Chemistry Honors! Congratulations on making the decision to pursue the Fundamental Science. The course calendar of assignments and due dates will be kept on the Blackboard website listed at the bottom of the page under useful links. Your user name is your first initial and last name (ex. eking) and your password is the last 4 digits of your school I.D. (If you had a blackboard ID, I kept it the same. If you have a common name, I added "a" to the end of your name.) After you log in click on Chemistry I -King under My Courses. You will be using the discussion board to ask questions and give and get help. You will use the calendar to keep up with due dates. Click on the Blackboard web address listed in the useful links section below to do your chemistry homework.Your homework is under Assignments. Check your Gradebook when finished to make sure grade is posted in blackboard. Syllabus Welcome to the study of your world! Chemistry is the study of matter; how its structure is related to its function, and how we use matter in our lives. Awesome stuff! Enhancements and tutorials from the publisher of Modern Chemistry are available on-line. Our blackboard website will have homework and test dates. Please check it out, ask questions, and give feedback about our studies on the discussion board. I want the website to be as user-friendly as possible. Materials: Notebook and paper, folder for labs, pencils, and a scientific calculator (EE key) Class Rule: Mutual Respect and Responsibility for Learning (see agenda for school policies) Grading: First Nine Weeks 45% Tests and Quizzes 30% Labs and Activities 15% Homework 10% Nine Weeks Exam Second Nine Weeks 55% Tests and Quizzes 30% Labs and Activities 15% Homework Semester 15% Final Exam 42.5% First Nine Weeks 42.5% Second Nine Weeks Attendance: Science is a social process. We need you! Be ready to do science everyday. Make-up missed work immediately, the very day you return or make an appointment for the next day! Please bring parent note to administration by 8:10 am for excused absence. Make-ups for first 10 excused absences are after school most every day from 3:20 to 5pm, and by appointment in the mornings. All work must be made up within 5 school days. You must get administrative permission to be able to make up unexcused absences. Please refer to attendance policy for additional details. Always ask questions! We’ll work on answers together. Your collaboration and support is vital to the class. Do not impede the success of others. STAY ON TASK in class!!! Discipline problems will be addressed by: 1) Teacher-student mini-conference (during class) 2) Teacher-student conference plus 30 min. detention/work before or after school within 2 days 3) Teacher-parent phone conference plus 60 min. detention/work within 2 days 4) Referred to administration (immediately if severe infraction) Class Procedures: 1. Be in assigned seat with notebook and pencil and calculator when bell rings. 2. When bell rings, stop talking and and get started doing chemistry. 3. Do experiments at assigned lab bench only. Do not touch other students’ lab materials nor open and get materials from any storage cupboard, drawer, or closet. Clean up! 4. Do science for the whole period. Keep head up. Don’t do homework in class. Practice. 5. LISTEN! Only one person talking at a time. 6. Stay seated until release bell rings. Tuck in chairs. Throw away trash. 7. Turn in work on time! Put name, date, and period on all work (-10% if not). If you need an extension on work, ask for a late acceptance, -10% penalty.
