45. Responsibility - The state, fact, or position of being accountable to somebody or for something

46. Reward technique - Something desirable given in return for what somebody has done

47. Self-concept - A complete and individual personality, especially one that somebody recognizes as his or her own and with which there is a sense of ease

48. Self-control - The ability to control your own behavior, especially in terms of reactions and impulses

49. Self-esteem - Confidence in your own merit as an individual person

50. Self-observation - Awareness of one's own personality, skills, and traits

51. Skills - The ability to do something well, usually gained through training or experience

52. Spatial intelligence - picture smart

53. Stereotype - An oversimplified standardized image of a person or group

54. Stimulus - Something that encourages an activity or a process to begin, increase, or develop

55. Strengths - A valuable or useful ability, asset, or quality

56. Superior attitude - A feeling of surpassing others in something such as intellect, achievement, or ability

57. Sympathy - The ability to enter into, understand, or share somebody else's feelings

58. Talents - Natural ability in particular activity. a natural ability for being good at a particular activity

59. Transferable skills - A skill that is not limited to a specific academic discipline, area of knowledge, job, or task and is useful in any work situation, e.g. communication or organizational skills

60. Values - The worth, importance, or usefulness of something to somebody

61. Visual learning style - Uses visual objects such as graphs, charts,   pictures, and seeing information

62. Visualization - To form a visual image of something in the mind



CM – 2.01 Vocabulary

1. Active listening - the practice of paying close attention to a speaker and asking questions to ensure full comprehension

2. Analogy - a comparison between two things that are similar in some way, often used to help explain something or make it easier to understand

3. AP courses – advanced placement, college courses taken in high school

4. Apprenticeship - One bound by legal agreement to work for another for a specific amount of time in return for instruction in a trade, art, or business

5. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB - is a test developed and maintained by the United States Department of Defense.

6. Attainment - the action or fact of achieving a goal toward which one has worked

7. Career cluster - provide students with a context for studying traditional academics and learning the skills specific to a career, and provide U.S. schools with a structure for organizing or restructuring curriculum offerings and focusing class make-up by a common theme such as interest.

8. Certifications - an official document that gives proof and details of something such as personal status, educational achievements, ownership, or authenticity

9. Clear - easy to understand

10. Comprehension - the action or capability of understanding something

11. Concise - using as few words as possible to give the necessary information, or compressed in order to be brief

12. Convincing - able to persuade somebody to believe that something is true or to act

13. Cooperative education - a school program that allows students to receive academic credit for career work in the student's field of interest done outside the school

14. Correlation - a mutual relationship or connection between two or more things

15. Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) - Vocational student organization; nonprofit, national organization with state and local chapters that exist to develop leadership skills and good citizenship among members; each organization is composed of vocational students interested in a specific occupational area.

16. Dual enrollment - involves students being enrolled in two separate, academically related institutions. Generally, it refers to high school students taking college courses.

17. Extra-curricular activities - fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school or university education, performed by students.  Such activities are generally voluntary, mandatory, non-paying, social, philanthropic as opposed to scholastic, and often involve others of the same age.

18. Formal Learning - highly institutionalized, bureaucratic, curriculum driven, and formally recognized with grades, diplomas, or certificates

19. IB courses – International baccalaureate, offering internationally recognized courses

20. Informal Learning - organized learning outside of the formal education system;  tend to be short-term, voluntary, and have few if any prerequisites.

21. Internship - a type of work experience for entry-level job-seekers

22. Interpersonal skills - concerning or involving relationships between people

23. Legible - (of handwriting or print) clear enough to read

24. Post-Secondary - education after high school.

25. Proofread - to read the text and mark corrections to be made

26. Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) - appointed by the Secretary of Labor to determine the skills our young people need to succeed in the world of work

28. Transcript - an official document showing the educational work of a student in a school or college

3.01 CM Vocab

1. Attainable To achieve especially by effort.

2. Career plan - A list of steps including activities, work experience, and education/training needed to reach a career goal; step-by-step plan of action including career information influenced by the ultimate career goal; a written outline (time schedule) of what a person wants to achieve including details of how goals will be achieved.

3. Critique - Evaluate (a theory or practice) in a detailed and analytical way.

4. Domain - A specified area or discipline

5. Entry level - The lowest level in an employment hierarchy, a low-level job in which an employee may gain experience or skills.

6. Long term - Involving or in effect for a number of years.

7. Measurable - Able to be measured, quantifiable

8. Medium term goal - Set to be achieved somewhere between a person's short-term goals and his long-term goals

9. Personal goal - Goals that one wants to achieve for himself/herself.

10. Realistic - Objects, actions, or social conditions as they actually are; attainable.

11. Semi-skilled - Having or needing some, but not extensive, training; having or requiring more training and skill than unskilled labor but less than skilled labor.

12. Short term - Involving or occurring over a short period; immediate.

13. SMART Process - A S.M.A.R.T. goal is defined as one that is specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time- bound.

14. Specific - Concrete terms.

15. Stepping-stone goal - Short-, medium-, and long-term goals that can help you reach your ultimate career goal in realistic stages; allow adjustments to be made to the career plan.

16. Ultimate goal - The final conclusion.

3.02 CM VOCAB

1. Alternatives - A choice limited to one of two possibilities, as of things, propositions, or coursed of action.

2. Bias - A tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc., are better than others that usually results in treating some people unfairly

3. Chance - The occurrence and development of events in the absence of any obvious design.

4. Characteristics - Pertaining to, constituting, or indicating the character or peculiar quality of a person or thing; typical; distinctive

5. Complaint Decision Making - The choice is made for you by someone else, with your permission.

6. Compromise - Something that combines qualities or elements of different things; to give up something to reach a decision.

7. Consequence - The effect, result, or outcome of something occurring earlier.

8. Decision - A choice or judgment; helps to meet goals; the question that needs to be answered in the decision making process.

9. Decision making process - The process of choosing between two or more alternatives or options; most logical way to make a decision.

10. Decision making style - The typical manner in which a person makes a decision.

11. Delaying Decision Making - The need for decision making is not recognized or, if recognized, it is put off for some future date.

12. Eldercare - The care of older persons/parent, especially in the home and by a son or daughter.

13. Employee Benefits - Indirect and non-cash compensation in addition to their normal wages or salaries paid to an employee. Some benefits are mandated by law (such as social security, unemployment compensation, and workers compensation), others vary from firm to firm or industry to industry (such as health insurance, life insurance, medical plan, paid vacation, pension, and gratuity).

14. Family Medical Leave Act - Allows employees of government agencies and companies with more than fifty employees to take up to three months of unpaid leave during or after a pregnancy. 

15. Flex time - A system of working that allows an employee to choose, within limits, the hours for starting and leaving work each day.

16. Fringe Benefit - An extra benefit supplementing an employee's salary, for example, a company car, subsidized meals, bonus, privilege, etc.

17. Impulsive Decision Making - A choice is made without adequately finding alternatives or collecting information about the self and alternatives.

18. Job sharing - To share the responsibilities and duties of a single full time job with one or more other employees.

19. Major decision - Important decision that influences a person’s future such as a career decision.

20. Painful Decision Making - A lot of time and energy are spent, but a choice is not made.

21. Planful Decision Making - A step-by-step process is used to identify alternatives and to choose one.

22. Pre-requisite skill acquisition - (pre-requisite = predecessor course) the necessity to master a basic skill prior to a higher level skill, hierarchical learning, scaffolding.  i.e. – walk before run, add before subtract or multiply, etc.

23. Routine - A series of activities performed regularly.

24. Stability - The state or quality of being stable

25. Stereotype - An oversimplified and distorted belief about a person or group. 

26. Telecommuting - Working at home by using a computer terminal electronically linked to one’s place of employment.

5. Classify - arrange (a group of people or things) in classes or categories according to shared qualities or characteristics.

6. Clerical - (of a job or person) concerned with or relating to work in an office, especially routine documentation and administrative tasks.

7. Compatibility - a state in which two things are able to exist or occur together without problems or conflict.

8. Current - belonging to the present time; happening or being used or done now.

9. Dictionary of Occupational Titles - defunct publication produced by the United States Department of Labor which matched job seekers to jobs from 1938 to the late 1990s. It was then rendered obsolete and replaced by a database which is largely informed by people who have direct experience working in each occupation, the Occupational Information Network or the O*NET.

10. DOL Employment and Training Administration - mission of the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) is to contribute to the more efficient functioning of the U.S. labor market by providing high quality job training, employment, labor market information, and income maintenance services primarily through state and local workforce development systems.

11. Goal - the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

12. Goods - merchandise; wares; tangible products that satisfy human wants.

13. Informational Interview  - a meeting between you and a professional to seek advice & insight on their career, the industry, and the corporate culture of a potential future workplace; . The purpose is to help define your career options.

14. Intrinsic - belonging naturally; ff or relating to the essential nature of a thing

15. Job security -  the probability that an individual will keep his or her job; a job with a high level of job security is such that a person with the job would have a small chance of becoming unemployed.

16. Job-shadowing - work experience option where students learn about a job by walking through the work day as a shadow to a competent worker. The job shadowing work experience is a temporary, unpaid exposure to the workplace in an occupational area of interest to the student.

17. Myth -  a widely held but false belief or idea.

18. Non-traditional career - a non-traditional occupation is defined as any occupation in which women or men comprise less than 25% of the workforce. Today, many women and men are breaking down barriers to pursue careers.

19. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction - implement the state's public school laws and the State Board of Education's policies and procedures governing pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public education. The guiding mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education is that every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work and postsecondary education and prepared for life in the 21st Century.

20. Occupational Info Network (O*NET) -  a free online database that contains hundreds of occupational definitions to help students, job seekers, businesses and workforce development professionals to understand today's world of work in the United States.

21. Occupational Outlook Handbook  (OOH) - a publication of the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics that includes information about the nature of work, working conditions, training and education, earnings, and job outlook for hundreds of different occupations.

22. Periodical - a magazine or newspaper published at regular intervals.

23. Service Learning -  a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities

24. Services - intangible products such as accounting, banking, cleaning, consultancy, education, insurance, expertise, medical treatment, or transportation. We pay someone to do something for us because: we do not want to do it, don’t have the time or don't have the expertise.

25. Shift work -  recurring periods in which different groups of workers do the same job in rotation

26. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) - a system for classifying industries by a four-digit code, used by government agencies to classify industry areas.

27. Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) - system is used by Federal statistical agencies to classify workers into occupational categories for the purpose of collecting, calculating, or disseminating data. All workers are classified into one of 840 detailed occupations according to their occupational definition. To facilitate classification, detailed occupations are combined to form 461 broad occupations, 97 minor groups, and 23 major groups.

28. Strategy - a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.

29. Trade -  a skilled job, typically one requiring manual skills and special training.

30. Traditional Career -  Earlier, women were confined to traditional roles such as housewives but now they also want to contribute to the family budget. The only hassle is that women in the job market have often been confined to undertake traditional jobs rather than being allowed to undertake challenging jobs that men usually take up.

31. Transferable skills - aptitude and knowledge acquired through personal experience such as schooling, jobs, classes, hobbies, sports etc. Basically, any talent developed and able to be used in future employment.

32. Unbiased -  showing no prejudice for or against something; impartial.

33. Volunteer -  someone who undertakes community service work of his or her own free will, without receiving a salary or wage in return.


CM – 3.04 Vocabulary

ASSIGNMENT:  ALL WRITING MUST BE NEAT & LEGIBLE.

1. Action verb - a verb that shows that something is being done, a word that shows action.

2. Adaptability - able to change or be changed in order to fit or work better in some situation or for some purpose.

3. Chronological - (of a record of events) starting with the earliest and following the order in which they occurred.

4. Competency - the ability to do something successfully or efficiently.

5. Cover letter - a letter sent with, and explaining the contents of, another document (resume).

6. Critical Thinking - the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment.

7. Dependability  - reliable and dependable in performing job-related tasks, finishing assigned projects, meeting deadlines and appointments.

8. Employability skills - the transferable skills needed by an individual to make them 'employable'. Along with good technical understanding and subject knowledge, employers often outline a set of skills that they want from an employee.
9. Employment agencies - an agency that finds employers or employees for those seeking them.

10. Employment leads - information about an open position telling you that a company is hiring - what person or company, what position they're trying to fill, what job skills and/or education are required, etc.

11. Employment Security Commission - for more than 50 years, your ESC has played a key role in North Carolina’s economic vitality, helping employers find the staff they need to carry out their business; serving as a career resource center for workers at all skill levels and age groups; supplying labor market data to government officials, researchers and others; and providing unemployment insurance to people who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.

12. Entrepreneur - a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.

13. Flexibility - easily changed : able to change or to do different things.

14. Follow Up Letter - a letter sent as a follow-up to an initial letter or to a telephone call, meeting, etc.

15. Form W-4 - used by your employer to determine the amount of taxes to withhold from your paycheck, the W-4 Form can help you out at tax time. Here are the details. The W-4 is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form you complete to let your employer know how much money to withhold from your paycheck for federal taxes.

16. Geographic mobility -  the measure of how populations move over time. Geographic mobility, population mobility, or more simply mobility is also a statistic that measures migration within a population.

17. Honesty - fairness and straightforwardness of conduct, adherence to the facts : sincerity.

18. Hourly Wage - an amount of money paid each hour to compensate an employee for the amount of time he/she spends working.

19. Information - facts provided or learned about something or someone.

20. Interpersonal Skills - life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups. People who have worked on developing strong interpersonal skills are usually more successful in both their professional and personal lives.

21. Letter of Application - also known as a cover letter, is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience; provides detailed information on why are you are qualified for the job you are applying for.

22. Master - having or showing very great skill or proficiency.

23. Networking - interact with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one's career.

24. Pre-employment tests - tests that organizations give to job applicants to help them hire employees who are productive, dependable, and low-turnover. 

25. Problem Solving - the process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues.

26. Resource - a stock or supply of money, materials, staff, and other assets that can be drawn on by a person in order to function effectively.

27. Resume - a brief account of a person’s education, qualifications, and previous experience, typically sent with a job application.

28. Salary - a fixed regular payment, typically paid on a monthly or biweekly basis but often expressed as an annual sum, made by an employer to an employee, especially a professional or white-collar worker.

29. self-employment - a situation in which an individual works for himself or herself instead of working for an employer that pays a salary or a wage. A self-employed individual earns their income through conducting profitable operations from a trade or business that they operate directly.

30. Skill verbs - use these verbs to describe your skills and accomplishments when writing your resume and cover letters -- to increase the strength of your writing and make potential employers take notice!

31. Technology Management - the field concerned with the supervision of personnel across the technical spectrum and a wide variety of complex technological systems.



CM – 3.05 Vocabulary

1. Baby boomer generation - the generation can be segmented into two broadly defined cohorts: the Leading-Edge Baby Boomers are individuals born between 1946 and 1955, those who came of age during the Vietnam War era.


2. Commute - travel some distance between one's home and place of work on a regular basis.


3. Conference Call - a telephone call by which a caller can speak with several people at the same time.

4. Dual income -  a household in which there are two incomes

5. Economic conditions -  the state of the economy in a country or region, change over time in line with the economic and business cycle, as an economy goes through expansion and contraction.

6. Embargo - an official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country.

7. Employment trends - show whether employment in a particular area has risen or declined in the stated years.

8. Globalization - a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology.

9. Implication - the conclusion that can be drawn from something, although it is not explicitly stated; the action or state of being involved in something.

10. Infer - deduce or conclude (information) from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements.

11. Manufacturing - make (something) on a large scale using machinery.

12. Societal changes  - social change, refers to any significant alteration over time in behavior patterns and cultural values and norms.

13. Societal needs - to a large degree reflected in industrial needs (for innovation, improved standards, low cost production methods, knowledge about the human body, better access to data and academic knowledge)

14. Tariff - a tax or duty to be paid on a particular class of imports or exports.

15. Telecommuting - work from home, making use of the Internet,  e-mail, and the telephone.

16. Trends - a general direction in which something is developing or changing

17. Video/voice conferencing - means to conduct a conference between two or more participants at different sites by using computer networks to transmit audio and video data.
