If a longhouse in real life is 20 feet wide by 20 feet tall and between 180 to 220 feet long, and you want to make a small model of this smaller than 2ft by 2ft then you can make it 1/2 inch scale.
Half-inch scale works like this:
1 foot in a real structure will be 1/2 inch in the model:
Therefore the model will be 10 inches wide 10 inches tall and between 9 inches and 11 inches long.
Another example can be a model of a Tipi. If the height is 9 ft and the diameter of the base is 12 ft then you model should be 4.5 inches high and your base should be 6 inches in diameter for 1/2 inch scale.
Either way the ratio of the width and height will be same for real life and the model.
