Sled Dog Research Assignment

Imagine that you are helping train Stripey to pull a dogsled. You need to find out more about sled dogs and how to train them. Look for books or encyclopedias, check out some cd-roms or consult some internet sites like the ones listed at the bottom of this page. Look for answers to some of these and other questions.

Once you have found your information compile your findings into a question and answer booklet. Make sure to pay attention to the criteria M. Fortier discussed in class. The rubric contains all the criteria for evaluation.  You may download the rubric by right clicking the link at the bottom of this page and selecting "save target as."

Questions to research:

Start by finding and writing answers to the questions below.  Make sure to answer the questions using complete sentences and paragraphs.  Make up 4 of your own questions to put in your information booklet. Make sure to include diagrams or pictures.

1. What do sled dogs eat?

2. Are they pets or working animals or both?

3. How does the lead dog control the team?

4. How do they learn to pull the sled?

5. What kinds of sleds are there?

6. How are the dogs attached to the sled?

How to make the booklet.

Students will make the booklet in MS Publisher. I will provide time for students to do it at school. Follow the instructions below. It may be a good idea to have your Publisher document open and this page open at the same time so you can follow the instructions.

1.  Open MS Publisher.

2.  Click blank publications.

3.  Select "Book fold"

4. Publisher will ask you if you want to automatically insert 3 pages.  Click "yes."

5.  Click file>page setup and change the setting from portrait to landscape.

6.  Save your file by clicking file>save as> save the file to your H drive.

7.  Navigate the pages of your booklet by clicking on the page numbers of your booklet at the bottom of the page.

8.  Use text boxes inside the blue rectangle.  Make sure to save your work often.

9.  Use "insert" to insert photos and text boxes.

10.  Type your text and arrange pictures on the pages.  Make sure to have a good mix of pictures and text.
