Code de Correction

Hello and welcome to the grade 5/4 correction code.  On this page you will find the symbols we use in class to identify errors in our writing.  In the table below you will see the type of error, the symbol and then I will provide an example and an English explanation of the error.

Spelling

O

This symbol is used to indicate a common spelling error.

Genre
Gender

M ou F

This symbol is used when there is an error indicating the gender.  If it is M then the masculine form must be used.

Nombre
Singular/plural

S/PL

This symbol is used to indicate a problem with how you have written the word.  If it should be plural you will see a PL above the word.  You should then write the plural form of the word.

Accord
Agreement

ACC

This symbol indicates there is problem with the agreement in your sentence.  For example adjectives must agree with the noun that is being described.

Vocabulaire
Vocabulary

VOC

This indicates that there is a problem with the vocabulary you have used.  This is often an anglicism.

Arrows indicate that you have made an error concerning the order of the words in your sentence.

This arrow indicates that there is a missing word or phrase that should go there.

This symbol indicates an error with punctuation. You could be missing a period or a question mark.

Vague ideas

squiggly lines

Squiggly lines around a phrase or sentence indicate that your ideas are difficult to understand.

Nouveau paragraphe

You must start a new paragraph.

Homophones

HOM

This indicates a homophone.  Homophones are words that sound like other words that often have different spellings and meanings.  For example c’est and sais.

Déterminant
Article

DÉT

The article you have used is incorrect.  This error often goes hand in hand with gender errors.

Accent

This symbol indicates an error using accents.  I will often add the correct accent on your word.

X

An X over the word or phrase indicates it does not belong there and should be removed.

Majuscule
Capital letter

MAJ

The word must be capitalized.

Négation

NEG

You have not used the negative form correctly.

 

 

 

Verbes

 

Verbs use their own symbols.   The errors students typically make are incorrect tense and conjugation errors. 

Infinitif

INF

You must use the infinitive form of the verb.

Présent

PRES

You must use the present tense.

Passé composé

P.C.

You must use the passé composé

Imparfait

IMP

You must use the imparfait tense.

Participe passé

PP

You must use the past form of the verb.  Verbs ending in ER end in é.  ex. Regarder becomes regardé.

Impératif

I

This is used to give commands in French.

Auxiliaire

AUX

Your auxillary is incorrect or missing. In French avoir or être are used as auxillaries in the past tense.  There are only 16 verbs that use être to conjugate the past tense.  The mnemonic device Dr. + Mrs Vandertramp can help you to remember them.

Plus que parfait

PQP

You must use the plus que parfait.

Futur proche

FP

You must use the future proche tense.
