Mathématiques 5ième année

Dear Parents:

The material you will find on this page makes up the bulk of the grade five math course.  At the top of the page you will see a table of links.  Please take a moment from time to time and visit some of these sites with your son or daughter.

Below the table you will see a breakdown and description of some of the themes and activities our class will undertake this year.

Liens de Math

Aquamath This is a LearnAlberta website.  It is in French.  There are lots of interesting and fun games and activities to do.
Mathfrog This website is available in English and French.  Lots of good activities here.
Estimation by rounding Fun estimation game.
Pattern blocks The same pattern blocks we use in class are available on this site.  This is good if you need to do activities with blocks but you do not have the actual blocks.
Woodlands Math zone Interactive math activities.
Illuminations Activities This site has some excellent math activities.  Make sure to check it out.
National  Library of Virtual

Manipulatives

This is a great website with lots of interesting activities to do.  The virtual manipulatives let you do activities with fractions, patterns, shapes and lots of other stuff.
King's List of On-line Math Activities    There are more links at this page than you could shake a stick at.
Cash Out You're the cashier at this crazy store.  You need to give change to customers buying things. Try to sell as many items as possible.
Fraction Shapes Fun with fractions. Use pattern blocks to solve problems involving fractions.
Create a Graph This site will help you create graphs.
Bright Sparks There are fun math games to play at this site.
Ask Dr. Math Answers to all sorts of math questions.  This site might be a bit advanced but have a look at it anyway.
Symmetry This is an interesting geometry site.  Learn all about symmetry and other geometrical concepts.

The main resource for our grade 5 math program is Mathématique.  The grade five class will complete activities from this resource as well as supplementary material I will draw from other sources.  Maths is taught in French and students are expected to develop language skills related to the math work we will do.

The table below is intended as a general guide and timeline for the completion of the modules.  At some point I may decide to insert material from other sources to cover certain topics.

Module 1: Les régularités et les équations

  • Analyse a number pattern and state the pattern rule.

  • Pose and solve problems by applying a patterning strategy.

  • Describe a pattern using an expression.

  • Interpret a problem and select the best strategy.

  • Express a problem as an equation.

  • Create and solve equations using all four operations.

Module 2: Les nombres naturels
  • In this unit, your child will:

  • Recognize and read numbers to 1 000 000.

  • Read and write numbers in standard, expanded, and written forms.

  • Use place value to represent numbers.

  • Estimate sums and differences, and select and use estimation strategies

  • to determine if his or her calculations are reasonable.

  • Pose and solve problems using whole numbers.

Module 3: La multiplication et la division de nombres naturels.
  • Recall basic multiplication and division facts.

  • Use different strategies to estimate products and quotients.

  • Multiply and divide numbers mentally.

  • Multiply a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number.

  • Divide a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number.

  • Pose and solve problems using whole numbers.

  • Solve problems with more than one step.

Module 4: La mesure
  • Estimate and measure length in millimetres and centimetres.

  • Investigate the relationships between millimetres and centimetres, and

  • between millimetres and metres.

  • Explore rectangles with equal perimeters.

  • Explore rectangles with equal areas.

  • Construct different rectangles, given the area and/or perimeter.

  • Estimate, measure, and record volume in cubic centimetres and in cubic

  • metres.

  • Estimate, measure, and record capacity in millilitres and litres.

Module 5: Les fractions et les nombres décimaux
  • In this unit, your child will:

  • Model, compare, and order fractions and decimals.

  • Explore equivalent fractions and decimals.

  • Relate fractions to division and to decimals.

  • Use decimals to record measurements.

  • Estimate decimal sums and differences.

  • Add decimals with tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

  • Subtract decimals with tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

  • Pose and solve problems involving fractions and decimals.

Module 6: La géométrie
  • Build, represent, and describe geometric objects and shapes

  • Identify and sort quadrilaterals (that is, shapes with 4 sides)

Module 7: La statistique et la probabilité
  • Learn the difference between first-hand and second-hand data

  • Ask questions and decide whether the answer requires first-hand or

  • second-hand data

  • Find examples of second-hand data in print and electronic media

  • Solve problems by constructing and interpreting double bar graphs

  • Use words such as likely, unlikely, impossible, and certain

  • Describe the probability of everyday events

  • Compare the likelihood of two events

Module 8: Les transformations
  • Describe and explore translations (slides), reflections (flips),

  • and rotations (turns).

  • Perform and identify translations, reflections, and rotations.

  • Draw translations, reflections, and rotations.
